Should I get my doctor’s advice? Yes, absolutely! Your doctor is your friend! Before beginning any change in eating habits, lifestyles, or physical activities go for a checkup. And make sure to have an annual physical. Shift your focus to preventative medical care. I find it important to work with a doctor not only to help me when I'm not feeling well, but to help me feel well all the time. I made an effort to find a doctor that I really feel comfortable with; someone I trust who is highly educated, experienced, humane and patient, and who is interested in me as a person (not just as a "sick person.") I do have annual checkups. I ask for preventative tests, and get them. I call my doctor or write notes with questions. I am my own best health care advocate! Why? Because for many years I ignored my health, and was in such pain and sickness from obesity I was embarrassed to go to the doctor. I also had doctors who weren't so great. They'd spend only a couple of minutes with me, write a prescription, and that’d be that. I need more than a "doctor robot!" I need a human being, like me, who cares.
