Norris, I am on vacation and all there is to eat is fast, junk food! Help! What do I do? Congratulations, you’ve taken the time to have fun, relax, and recharge. I hope you have a wonderful time. Remember that vacation is just what it says: it means you are vacating. You are getting away from work, home, troubles, and old habits. Vacation is not a license to destroy yourself! It is not a moment to throw out your good health. Vacations are a time to really be joyful and happy. So, in terms of your Joy of Weight Loss progress there’s no reason to do anything differently. Actually, vacations are a time when you can really indulge in your joyful lifelong program. Keep logging and being conscious of your daily Food Plan. Even though there’s “only junk food” around, keep track of it. Try to avoid extremes, even in the fast food joints. Stay away from the extreme fats and sugars (carbs). Instead of ordering fried food, order grilled. Instead of ordering the super-size meal, order the regular or “medium” size meal. Have one of the salads, instead of the fries. For a drink, get unsweetened iced tea, water, or plain soda water (seltzer, or club soda). Don’t have the “diet” drink – it’s full of chemicals and may make you thirstier. There are sub sandwich chains that offer low-fat alternatives (but watch out for the giant size serving of bread). You can also go to a hamburger stand, but ask them to hold the sauces, and don’t eat the whole bun. You may also want to consider doing fewer things on your vacation, and take time to seek out healthier restaurants. You could go to a grocery store and buy more vegetables and fruit. Bring the fresh produce along on your ride, thus avoiding high fat/high calorie fast food. In other words, you have a ton of choices and more time to make them the way you choose!
