I was wondering how you personally feel about gastric bypass surgery. I am not considering it myself (as I am only about 10 lbs overweight), but I go back and forth in my mind about whether I think it is a positive option for obese people or whether it is just an easy way out. I personally feel that gastric bypass surgery is a frightening disaster. I have had several clients ignore my pleas and have it done, only to have serious (one almost fatal) side effects and little or no help with the weight problems. I speak only for myself, and not as an "expert," and I am not a doctor – but I firmly believe the problem lies not just in the body. If only losing weight were so one-dimensional and easy! To solve a weight problem we need to discover why we eat too much and move too little. It’s mostly about emotions and spirituality, not merely about food and food absorption. Surgery isn’t the easy way out, for anyone. It’s often way harder to undergo hospitalization, and the many doctors, nutrition, and counseling appointments involved, not to mention the pain and suffering and risky complications. We’ve all heard horror stories about people getting grave infections, or not getting enough nutrition after the surgery. Reversals are tricky and often impossible. Also, does just dealing with the stomach teach anyone healthy eating habits? No. You learn by doing, not by just hearing about healthy habits.
