I live in Florida. I was thinking of starting a support group based on your work. Do you have any suggestions? Has this been done before? Yes, there are a lot of Joy of Weight Loss support groups going, and I’m all for them! People helping each other is very powerful, as I know from friends helping me when I needed them. As long as they are free, and no one is making money from the support groups, it’s OK with me. To create a local support group, my suggestion is that you follow the 30-day plan in my book, The Joy of Weight Loss, and use my videos, Spiritual Guide to Weight Loss and 30 Days to Spiritual Well Being. Use the book as the framework and do the program together with the videos to instruct you along the way. If you meet once a week, everyone in the group can compare notes on their experience of doing a week from the book, and then try one or two segments from the videos and move or re-create together (dancing, yoga, stretching, walks, or a ballgame). After the initial 30 days, keep the support group going by helping each other keep doing what you learned to do every day in the book. Each day has thoughts and activities to keep you motivated and busy. Find a “buddy” and speak to each other every day, whether on the phone, or via email or Instant Messenger. Post your progress on our Beliefnet message boards and let us know how it’s going.
