Before you eat, in addition to taking a moment of silence, take a quick "feeling check." Do you feel calm and peaceful, or tense and anxious? Is something pressing on your mind? Are you worried about something? Give yourself the opportunity to feel the feeling, and once you are in touch, try to see what's underneath the emotion. What's causing it? Are you still stressed from work today? Are you worried about your relationship or finances? Or are you so happy and exuberant that you want to eat a ton of food to celebrate? Repressed emotions can cause you to "act out" by overeating. Instead of feeling the emotion, expressing or resolving it, we sometimes “act” in negative ways instead. So next time you are about to eat, look inside yourself and notice just how you’re feeling. If you cannot manage the emotion, it may not be a good time to eat. It might be better to take the time to work things out first.
