Dorothy Peasley
The final cutting of the cord.

When we lose our mothers, we are set adrift.

From the first breath, she pushed me away. Expelled me from her body, but held me near so I wouldn't be afraid.
She set me on unsteady feet and held my hand to guide me.
She put me on the school bus and waved goodbye, then went into the house and cried until I came home.
She forbade me to grow up too fast, so I could maintain face and have a scapegoat for being such a party pooper.
She sent me away to college and kept my room the same so I could come home.
She listened to my complaints about the past, then told me how she still woke at night crying for her mistakes.
She kept her own counsel, so I could learn how to be my own kind of mother. But she came and fix the meals and sang a million lullabyes.
She laughed at my jokes and cried with me until we became friends, letting me growup in a new way.
She told me she wasn't afraid and let go.
The final cutting of the cord?
She said she'd come and tell me and she did.
