In the midst of Disasters
Prayers for those who experience disasters

Please feel free to add your own prayers and to use the prayers that are posted here if you choose.

A prayer for the survivors:

Father/Mother Creator...
You love us and nurture us.
You are with us always
even in the midst of
hurricanes and floods and other disasters.
You are with us even when others
fail to help us or
come to our aid too slowly.
Please strengthen us.
Please help us hold on.
Please help us to feel you here with us.
Please help us to breathe in fully and to experience your presence within us as You are present with us within every breath.

For those who have been uprooted

Please give us your blessing
on our journey to a new place.
We leave behind so many memories.
We leave behind our homes and the familiar places,
our friends and family members,
our places of work,
our churches,
our communities,
and the things we have worked hard
to earn...
We leave behind so much.
Yet we are alive.
We breathe so we know that we have a purpose.
Please strengthen us and give us courage.
Please greet us kindly in all that we meet.
Please give us and those who help us Your blessings.
Whether we root down deep into new soil or return back to our old homes in the future, give us guidance and reassurance. Show us the way.
Let us know our purpose for being here and let us live it out fully.

Father/Mother Creator
Thank you for your love.
Thank you for Life.

A prayer for those who have lost friends and relatives

Mother/Father/Creator,
You are compassionate and loving.
Hold us close to you now for we are in pain.
Our hearts weep and cry out to you.
We feel angry and so alone in our anger.
It seems as if no one else understands our loss because no one else has suffered the loss of _____________
as we have.
And yet you understand us.
You know our anger and continue to love us. You know our pain and continue to hold us even when we sometimes feel ourselves to be even seperate from You.

You send quiet winds, butterflies, feather soft clouds, scents of flowers, childrens voices, tender grasses, a glass of water, a smile, food, a hug, clean clothing, the warmth of sunshine and the soft gentle rains to heal our hearts and our minds.

You will give us hope and strengthen us.
You who love ____________ so much will hold __________ in your heart.
You will tend to ________ with compassion and will heal __________ fully.
You love us and __________ and will insure that we see each other again.
You gave us the gift of having _________ in our lives.
Thank you for that gift.
Thank you for all that _______________
was to us.
Thank you for all that ________________
brought to us. Thank you for all the words, glances, gestures, movements, thoughts and prayers that ___________ breathed out to the world in every moment.

We know that ______________ is still with us in our minds and in our hearts.
We know that the love that formed us continues to connect us to each other and to you.

Mother/Father Creator...
Tend to us softly.
Hold us and __________
in your loving arms.
We are like little children
in need of holding and hugging
even when sometimes we get angry
and want to pull away.
Please hold us close to You anyway
and let us feel that closeness.

For those who watch as disasters unfold

Please God, give us abundant courage to face what we are witnessing and the willingness to somehow make a difference.

It is hard to see so many of our brothers and sisters in pain and in agony. It is hard to see their tears, and hard to watch the destruction of what they hold dear.

It is so easy to want to get angry and to point fingers of blame at other people, at the government, etc. as if that pointing of fingers could somehow make this time less painful. I have done this... I admit it... It was so easy...

It is so easy to avoid watching, to pretend that it is not as bad as it looks. It so easy to be in the head instead of dropping down into the heart and feeling the feelings.

It is so easy to say, "There if not for the Grace of God, go I." Yet your Grace remains present with those who are going through this disaster. You have not abandoned or forsaken them and nor have you abandoned or forsaken us.

Help us to have the courage to show compassion. Help us to be generous with our prayers, our breaths breathed out for all of our relations, and with whatever we have been given that we are capable of sharing without undo hardship.

Let us show our love to those who are now suffering which includes all of humanity...and especially those involved in this disaster.

Let us not be overcome with grief from what we see. Let us instead be strong and persist in doing what we can to assist wherever we can.
Let us share with each other and grow stronger from our helping of those in need.
