Steve D.
Dying of Colon Cancer

By now he should have given up, but he hasn't surrender his spirit to the tumors.

My uncle is 54, unmarried, & the favorite uncle of more than 30 nieces and nephews. Two years ago he was diagnosed with stage four colon rectal cancer.

Uncle Steve has never once wavered from his belief that he's going to get better. After two years of shrinking tumors, they're regrowing too quickly for the chemo to shrink, but his spirit of life refuses to give up. His smile still beams, and laughter still echoes.

We've spent every Easter dying eggs and hunting baskets. This year my family silently acknowledged there probably won't be any more Easters at Uncle Steve's. Uncle Steve put the egg dyes back in the box for "when we do this next year."

It's so hard to accept the doctor's 'weeks', when Steve keeps saying years.

Gracious and merciful God, be with him through the nausea, the agony and the isolation of his illness. Brother Jesus, impregnate us with the same hopeful, infectious spirit. Blessed Mother, be with him now and at the hour of his death.
