Earthquake Prayer Circle

For all those affected by the massive quake in the subcontinent, a short moment to send warm wishes

As many of you know, near the town of Bhuj in the state of Gujarat in western India, a huge earthquake jolted the Indian sub-continent last week.

The quake was felt in Bangladesh, Nepal and in Madras, South India. It's the equivalent of feeling a New York earthquake as far west as Chicago.

It is estimated that maybe in excess of 15,000 lost their lives and hundreds of thousands are homeless.

This prayer circle was created to send our warmest wishes and prayers to those impacted by this natural disaster. Our thoughts are with you.

Dear Lord, have mercy on those who suffered because of this earthquake. Let the souls of the dead rest with you in your heavenly kingdom. I ask for your compassion in the name of your son, Jesus Christ, and his mother, the Virgin Mary.

"Remove not, O Lord, the festal board that hath been spread in Thy Name, and extinguish not the burning flame that hath been kindled by Thine unquenchable fire. Withhold not from flowing that living water of Thine that murmureth with the melody of Thy glory and Thy remembrance, and deprive not Thy servants from the fragrance of Thy sweet savors breathing forth the perfume of Thy love.

Lord! Turn the distressing cares of Thy holy ones into ease, their hardship into comfort, their abasement into glory, their sorrow into blissful joy, O Thou that holdest in Thy grasp the reins of all mankind!

Thou art, verily, the One, the Single, the Mighty, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise."

'Abdu'l-Bahá (Selections from Bahá'í Prayers)

Dear God,
are you really there? This earthquake has apart from the massive destruction & loss of lives, made the people who are directly affected and some like me who are not directly affected question your existence? Where were you when thousands of people many of whom were young kids & old people who helplessly waited for you hoping that you would come and rescue them?Had all of them committed such unforgivable sins that they had to be punished so ruthlessly?I pray that the faith of the quake survivors is restored ! I pray that in the face of future adversities they would still have the faith & hope to look up at the skies and pray to god, and never ever have the feeling that they are "Children of a Lesser God
"

God, my prayer is to ask you to hold up the survivors of this quake to help them get thru this enormous upheaval of their lives. I pray for your comfort on the shoulders of the ones who lost loved ones and I pray you will open their eyes to some small pearl of hope in the rubble that they can hold on to. I feel very sad. It feels like the innocent are suffering, and that hurts. I pray for a blanket of love to cover this area now. Amen.

First, a prayer for the living:

A letter by Ezekkiah King of Judea when he was ill and recovered of his illness.
I said: In young age I will pass through the gates of hades, I shall miss the rest of my years. I said: I shall not see Yah, Yah in the land of Life, I shall not look at a man again with the dwellers of Earth; my generation is uprooted and exiled from me like a shepherd's tent; I cut off my life like a weaver; from the glory of my kingdom I am exiled; my days and nights are ended; I roar until morning like a lion, so He shatters all my bones; my days and nights are ended. Like a bird that chirps so I chirp, I moan like a dove. My eyes are lifted up above: Lord, extricate me, bail me! What can I speak? He told me and He did; I shall dance all my life for the bitterness of my soul [that God had releived]. The Lord [tells the dead] to live, and included with them the life of my spirit, and You healed me and kept me alive." (Isaiah 38:9-16)

As for the dead, may they all rest in peace. May as many of them as possible be brought to decent burial. May the Lord God console the hearts of the bereaved relatives and bring them peace and joy in place of their sorrow.

Death is swallowed forever, and the Lord God shall wipe the tears off all faces, Amen.
