Girlfriends and Lovers
Who lost someone to addiction

My boyfriend died in June 2004 after a losing a long battle with drugs. After his death I've come to realize how many people who have their life effected by drugs in someway, and that the closest victim is often the most overlooked.

Drug addiction is not a crime, it's an illness. It crosses all lines: race, age, sex, and religion. However, it is a crime how those closest to the addict are often treated, being victimised not only by his addiction but, the system and sometimes his family as well. As we try to move on with a shattered lives we are often judged for who we dared to love. That is why I offer up this new pray for those who have been closest to the flame without being consumed by it. We are not to blame for loving someone who did not love themselves. We shouldn't allow others to hold us accountable for doing whatever it takes to move on with our lives. When we love ourselves by letting go we are not being selfish we are taking what has happened to us and becoming stronger for it. Our broken hearts need not be wasted as hopefully we can reach out to others like ourselves and give them strengh to stand-up against the pill pushing society we live in.
