	RosannaD 12/14/2000 13:26	Convicted Spy Leaves Russia After Pardon Updated 11:43 AM ET December 14, 2000 By Patrick Lannin MOSCOW (Reuters) - Convicted U.S. spy Edmond Pope left Russia on Thursday just hours after President Vladimir Putin freed him from a 20-year jail sentence due to his poor health and the importance of U.S.-Russian relations. The United States welcomed the pardon, which removed a big irritant in ties just as it became clear that Republican George W. Bush would be the next U.S. president. Pope said it felt "great to be back in the real world" after arriving at a U.S. military base in Germany where he was to have a medical check-up before flying home. "It's great. I feel great. I feel good," a pale and visibly tired Pope told reporters from a balcony at the U.S. military hospital at Landstuhl, where he had been flown on a specially chartered jet after Putin pardoned him. Thank you Lord for answered prayers! AMEN
