Fernando De Andrade
Baby Fernando

New Haven-WTNH, Feb. 7, 2002 Updated 10:15 PM) _ An oxford family is racing against time. Thursday was their infant's two-month birthday. But they celebrated the day in the newborn special care unit at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The baby is terminally ill,

And in his two months of life Fernando has never left the hospital, but his parents say he deserves a quality of life most people take for granted.

"I think if we look at people and we say how long are you going to live and do you deserve to go outside, do you get to see the sun, No, I'm sorry you don't cause you're not going to live long enough -- I don't think that's fair."

And it also doesn't seem fair that Fernando is saddled with so many health problems. In addition to SMA, which destroys the nerves that contol movements like swallowing, he relies on a ventilator. Fernando also has congestive heart failure, and the list goes on.

Still, the De Andrades want to bring Fernando home. But the hospital will not release him until they secure 24-hour in home health care. Now the biggest problem finding nurses.
