Dear Mtorres1 i can empathize with where you find yourself now. I am also a nurse and have been for 12 years. I have questioned my choice of careers almost everyday since I started. There is a big gap between all the theory you learn in school and the compassion of your heart that drew you to nursing in the first place and the actual world of work that you are in now. You may be scared and disillusioned and you may be going home in tears at the end of your shift. Give it a year or so. Do the best you can every day and don't be afraid to share your fears and concerns with co-workers. You are not alone in what you feel. This is a very stressfull job. It is both emotionally and physically demanding. If after the end of a year or so if you still feel uneasy and anxious and other negative feelings I think you may want to consider changing fields or at least look at other options within nursing. There is no need to sacrifice your sanity for a paycheck. You can always make more money but it is too hard to retrieve your sanity. II am a psych. nurse and have been for 9 years. I worked for about 3 years on a med-surg floor that was full of renal patients and AIDS patients. I learned a lot but the pace drove me crazy and the constant looming crisis situations were too much for me to deal with every day. I have great respect for nurses who can handle that type of environment. Find out what your strengths are and go from there. Don't be afraid to try new areas. I will pray for you. Ours is not an easy profession . Take heart. If you aren't meant to be a nurse it isn't the end of the world. |

Dear Mtorres, I devoted 28 years to the profession of nursing. The knowledge and experienc I have gained is invaluable. Nursing is an excellent training ground for life's crisises. However I found it extremely draining and stressful, not due to the patients or the work itself, but more due to the work-loads expected and the out of touch administrators. I know what you are going through. I would hate to tell you to go into business or another field, as nursing CAN be rewarding, and compassionate and efficient nurses are much needed. Perhaps you can try different specilaties in nursing. One way to boost your confidence I have found is to take some of the CEU courses that are offered and then be sure your supervisor is aware of it and have documentation put in your employee file. Also find a topic you are interested in and offer to give a presentation to other interested medical staff, patients or families. Best of luck.I'll pray for your situation. L J |
