Myth #5: America Was Defeated
America never lost a significant battle – but fought the war to a stalemate, then negotiated a peace agreement and went home. On January 27, 1973, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and the United States signed the official peace agreement. On March 29, 1973, the Vietnam War officially ended for the United States as the last U.S. combat soldier left. According to officials, 2,709,918 Americans had served in the war; 58,148 were killed in action.
