Robert Nylen
Beliefnet co-founder and friend

Bob Nylen--co-founder of Beliefnet, husband, father, writer, Vietnam vet, and great friend--died peacefully at his home Tuesday, December 23, 2008.

Bob co-founded Beliefnet in 1999, served as president & was on the board until the company's sale last year. A Vietnam veteran, Bob also founded The New England Monthly magazine & was instrumental in launching Waterfront Media, a successful internet health company.

Bob will be remembered by his colleagues, family, & friends as a great leader, an honest partner, a gifted businessman, a man of judgment and instinct, and a believer in the possibilities of good ideas.

He will be greatly missed.

Bob's memoir will be published by Random House this spring. Read some of his Beliefnet articles here:

And a tribute by Beliefnet's other co-founder, Steven Waldman.

Bob was a wonderful coworker - he was always smiling and friendly, even when he was going through his own personal traumas. My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

I am so grateful for Bob, and his hand in the creation of Beliefnet.com. He has brought me, as well as others, I'm certain, so much joy, and a place of belonging and acceptance, when there wasn't anywhere else to go. Though personally, I didn't know him, forever grateful, I am to him. I'm sure he will be missed, but what a wonderful gift he bestowed upon us.

Bob, I hope you have internet connection in heaven, because I never got a chance to write you the email I meant to and tell you how you were one of the people that made my first (and second to last) office jobs meaningful and less harsh than it could have been. I'll never forget your email about the time when there was a shooting at the Burger King downstairs--- and the word "treacle"... for a totally unrelated reason. Your bike riding to work was inspirational.... your wit and humor sublime. Rest well in the great unknown world of heaven while we on Earth keep your memory and may your descendants continue in light of your spirit.
