Do-It-Yourself

The first gift doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant, so consider making something yourself. If you're low on cash, a cute poem, painting, or song is costs little to nothing, but makes a big impact regardless of your talent or skill level. Some easy gifts that require little skill include homemade Polaroid coasters, vintage bookmarks, or a one-of-a-kind candle. The thought and effort you put behind this gift shows you care about them! If you are really nervous about the quality of the gift, reach out to an artistic friend and solicit their help. More ideas can be found all over Pinterest, just take a look!

Factor in Timing

While the gift itself is a huge hurdle to overcome, it is also important to factor in time. There is a huge difference between someone you have been dating for only a couple of weeks, and someone who has been around for three months. These are both considered new relationships, but some are so new that it may seem inappropriate to get a gift of larger caliber.

If you are in a situation where you have only been on a couple of dates with someone, consider getting them something small. A card paired with their favorite chocolate, a Christmas ornament that made you think of them, or bottle of wine wrapped with a bow are all great ideas.

Be Sweet, Not Over the Top

Overall, you want to make sure your gift shows you care about them without going overboard. In the early stages of dating, hold off on declaring your undying love in a gift. Resist putting to many heart decorations or “I love you’s” all over the card or things you make. Learn more towards the lighter side of things until you all have established a more serious bond together. Spending $200 on the first gift may not translate into something kind – but instead scare them into thinking things are moving faster than they need to.

While shopping for a new relationship can be nerve-wracking, it doesn’t have to be. You will be able to find the perfect gift for that new special someone if you put your thinking cap on and try out some of these suggestions. Happy shopping!
