(NU)--Many people dream of winning the lottery, but college student Nick Burgess of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is living his dream and spreading the wealth by sharing with some special children at Shriners Hospitals. It was quite a surprise when the scratch-off ticket he purchased in Iowa showed he had won $100,000. He knew right away that he wanted to donate a portion of the money to a deserving children's charity. According to El Kahir Temple Potentate George Zinser, "After becoming familiar with the work of Shriners Hospitals through some of his friends who played in the Iowa Shrine Bowl, and also through a friend of his parents who was a Shriner, Nick chose to donate 10 percent of his net winnings to El Kahir Temple's Transportation Fund." His $6,700 donation will make it possible for El Kahir Temple Shriners to transport many patients to the Shriners Hospitals in Minneapolis and Chicago and the Burns Institute in Cincinnati. This year more than 365 kids sponsored by the Shiners at El Kahir have had appointments at the Chicago and Twin Cities hospitals and the Burns Institute in Cincinnati. Of those, 51 have been admitted for surgery, treatment and evaluation. Hospital vans driven by Shriners , known as "Hospital Dads" , and Flying Fez private planes have transported nearly 100 patients and their families from January through September. The Transportation Fund provides assistance for related patient expenses such as food, gas, housing and airfare. Families who are able to drive themselves are assisted with the cost of their gas, meals and accommodations. Many patients would not be able to get to the Shriners Hospitals for their appointments without the additional help offered to them through transportation fund donations at the various Shrine Temples. Generous donations from people like Nick Burgess enable the Temple to cover patient transportation and related expenses. For more information on Shriners Hospitals, call 1-800-237-5055.
