How Humans Build Their Shells
As children, each time we were shushed, or yelled at, our heart closed up a little. As teenagers, each time someone made fun of us, our hearts closed up some more. Remember the one constant grievance your mother had about your shyness? Or maybe your brother always teased you about your freckles? Simple everyday things being highlighted made us want to curl up and hide. And so, layer by layer, we built our shells, to create a solid defense mechanism against anyone who so much as looks at us the wrong way. We became hypersensitive.
