People complain all the time that smartphones and technology are causing problems. Such people are not wrong, but they are not entirely correct either. Technology certainly causes its fair share of problems, but it also allows families to keep in touch when they live apart. The technological explosion of the last decade, however, does bring with it some interesting questions for people of faith. How should they handle the myriad of temptations found on the internet? Can they use social media and continue to call themselves Christians or do they need to eschew the Twitter trend altogether?

Technology certainly creates new issues for believers to face, but it also give them new opportunities. Audiobooks have allowed thousands of Christians to listen to the Good Book during their morning commute, and Facebook has allowed for Bible study groups to form almost overnight. Given that most Christians have a smartphone in their pocket or purse, it makes sense that they would want to add some useful apps to it. With that in mind, here are the best smartphone apps for Christians.

iDisciple

The iDisciple app is a free app that is loaded with features. It contains just about everything a Christian could want or need. It allows a user to stream music from 12 different genres, read articles, listen to the radio and enjoy daily devotionals and growth plans. It offers information on a variety of subjects including evangelism, leadership, money, personal productivity, spiritual growth, adoption and prayer. The app’s stated mission is to “[lead] people to dive deeper into live-changing content to be closer connecting to God…[and] to connect people daily with God to make a global difference.” iDisciple is available through the Apple App Store and via Google Play.

Got Questions is a free app that is affiliated with the website of the same name. The mission of the website and app is stated as seeking “to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by providing Biblical, applicable and timely answers to spiritually related questions through an internet presence.” It is, essentially, a massive database of answers to the questions Christians ask. The queries Got Questions answers run the gamut from basic theological questions such as “Is Jesus God? Did Jesus ever claim to be God?” to advice for modern day life such as “What does the Bible say about venting?” and “Can a Christian woman wear sexually provocative lingerie for her husband?” Each question is answered with Bible verses for reference in order to help the reader understand the reasoning behind each answer. The website also offers a “Question of the Week” newsletter and a listing of their top 20 questions and answers.

SermonAudio is a free app that offers over 1.2 million sermons. The app allows a person to browse the sermon listings or search for a specific speaker or topic, such as family, marriage, weddings and funerals. The sermons can also be downloaded to allow a user to enjoy them offline. Foreign language sermons are also available for those who are bilingual, and the app offers PDF transcripts of sermons.

In addition to offering sermons from thousands of speakers, SermonAudio also comes with a church finder function. This allows users to search for nearby churches using their zip code or city name. The app also offers users access to playlists such as “Newest MP4 Videos,” “Daily Featured Sermons” and “Our Staff Picks.” The app is associated with a website of the same name.

The app produces a new prayer session each weekday and one on the weekend. Each session lasts around 10 to 12 minutes and combines music, Bible verses and questions for a person to reflect on. The prayer sessions aim to help users “become more aware of God’s presence in [their] life, listen to and reflect on God’s word and grow in [their] relationship with God.” The app can be used at any time, but it was designed with travel to and from work in mind. The app is free and available for both Android and Apple users.

YouVersion allows users to bookmark favorite verses, browse reading plans and tap into the Bible on the go. There are also a variety of films available through the app. YouVersion is compatible with a variety of devices and operating systems including both Android and iOS, Windows, Kindle Fire and via the internet.
