Consider the fowls of the air!
Jesus as a mother hen is a loving image, but it’s not especially dignified. The chicken is not a magnificent bird — it is the most domesticated animal there is. A hen is a fussy old biddy. Of course Jesus did not mean to compare himself to today’s factory-farmed chicken, but it is still a strange bird to call to mind. The story of Jesus is a little like the story of our God who lets Himself be domesticated – our God who chooses to do whatever it takes to redeem the world.
