A transition begins
However, in 1892 things began to change as local governments began taking over schools, which largely had been operated by the churches. As the government took over the reins, the American Teachers Union declared that schools should continue to teach morals from the Bible. In 1925, Florida State legislators passed a law requiring daily Bible reading in public schools. The governor of Tennessee signed a law forbidding the teaching of evolution in public schools. But then lawyers from the new American Civil Liberties Union took a local school district to court in the famous Scopes Monkey Trial in an effort to have evolution taught in Tennessee Public Schools.
