The comfort of community
“After the car accident [that killed three of my family members],” a friend said to me once, “I went to church again, but I couldn’t bring myself to sing. I let other people sing for me.” In times of doubt, community carries us. During my own faith crisis, friends and family gave me space to disbelieve. They gave me space to struggle. My dad sat on the couch and talked with me about my doubts. A college professor took me out to coffee. A friend listened to my questions without giving cheap, easy answers. As a pilgrim on a search, I felt carried by this community."
