Since then, he has freelanced and taught. He contributed chapters to three books and wrote "Holy Siege," on Catholic life in America, which was published in 1992 by Harper San Francisco. He has written articles for numerous magazines and periodicals, and is now working on a book about the crisis among American nuns for Random House. He is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church.
Kenneth Briggs became a reporter for the Gardner News in Massachusetts during summer school breaks. He joined the staff of Newsday in 1970, becoming its first religion writer. He moved to The New York Times in 1974 as the religion editor and remained there until 1985.
