Dede came to live with us when I was six months old. My parents both worked and in those days before daycare, they needed someone stable to look after a colicky infant and keep the house in order. Dede, who studied spirituality for years, became my 3rd parent, my first spiritual teacher, and arguably the biggest single influence in my life. Here’s a Top 10 list of her wisdom:

1. God is All and Everywhere. You’ll never be where God is not.
2. Never miss a musical.

3. All creatures are important. God knows when a sparrow falls.
4. There are two kinds of women in the world: work horses and race horses. You decide which kind to be by how you take care of yourself.
5. Cigarettes are coffin nails. Dede’s beloved husband had died in his 50s of lung cancer; she knew tobacco caused cancer when doctors were still endorsing Camels.
6. Your body is a temple and you’re supposed to decorate it. (She loved well-tailored clothes.)
7. It’s important at night to say your prayers and use face cream.
8. Aspirin, Mentholatum, and oil of peppermint can cure nearly anything.
9. All religions are trying to get people to the same place.
10. When you love someone with complete acceptance, you live in them forever. That’s how Dede lives in me.
