Biggest Religion Story of 2010? Koran Burning Pastor, Terry Jones

posted by Brad Hirschfield

The Religion Newswriters Association lists the top 10 relgion stories of 2011, and I was disappointed, but not surprised when Pastor Terry Jones did not appear on the list. Jones is the Florida-based minister who planned a public Koran burning gets my vote for the most influential American religious figure of 2010. Why was I disappointed? Because he showed us the limits of our fear and rage, or at least the limits of their expression.
At the end of the day, most Americans, including those with a great deal of fear of Islam, and anger directed at all Muslims, rejected Jones’ proposed actions. Terry Jones helped us to remember that whatever it is we think, the vast majority of us know that burning books, especially books that are sacred to pretty much anyone, is simply not right. While that should be obvious, it turns out that we needed the reminder and we got it, thanks to Mr. Jones.
Addiction experts speak of the need for addicts to “hit bottom” before they can address their addiction, and that’s what happened with America and Terry Jones. We hit bottom, and when we did, even people and organizations that might have been supportive of Jones, pulled back and declared that his proposal crossed a line which needed to remain uncrossed.
Ultimately, even Pastor Jones realized the folly of his ways and in doing so, showed us the line we as a nation were not prepared to cross. That’s a story worth recalling.
Jones surely taught us more than the whole Park 51/Ground Zero Mosque project, which topped the Religion Newswriters Association list. There is no building in place and not even one under construction. That story taught us nothing other than the ways in which a small group of people can stir up publicity based on either over-the-top proposals which have limited chances of being realized as proposed, or on the effectiveness of exploiting baseless fear in the electorate in the months leading up to an election.
We ought not to confuse people we admire or agree with, with those who are important or influential. I doubt there is much about which Terry Jones and I would agree upon, especially when it comes to interreligious affairs I general or Islam in particular.
Having said that, to look back on religion stories of 2010 and fail to acknowledge how we all learned an important lesson because of him, would be a mistake. So where on the list he belongs, I cannot say, but he surely belongs there which is why I cast this vote for Pastor Terry Jones.

That is because Rabbi Brad you are ignorant with regards to Islam. Try reading from the source to educate yourself.
Here is a book you should read.
“Reliance of the Traveller: The Classic Manual of Islamic Sacred Law Umdat Al-Salik”

I vote for the ongoing scandal of Roman Catholic officials up to the very highest level being involved in protecting child-molesting priests and putting them where they are still involved with children but their proclivities are unknown.
Then there’s the irony of those officials trying to instruct the rest of us in morality.

There are many people who don’t want to give this evil man the publicity of naming this one of the religious stories of the year.

Terrry Jones should have been a non-story.
No Publicity, nothing. His antics would have gone largely unnoticed.
Media whore’s.. saw the potential of whipping up public opinion and increasing news sales and ‘hits’ on websites that advertiser’s pay big bux for.
Terry Jones is the story of MEDIA manipualtion and little more than that.

One “off” pastor is the religious story of 2010: more important than the Muslim war against Christians, Jews and the West? Ok, if that’s too general, more important than the murder of 21 Coptic Christians in Alexandria Egypt by Muslims? More important than the over 20 separate attempts by Muslims in the US to commit massive terrorist acts? More important than the ongoing war between Shias and Sunnis? I could continue this list, but our poor blogger is so smitten with pretentious, bootlicking pc behavior that he chooses one little nutcase with no followers and no influence to show that he understands the real issue of our age is danger of …………..Christianity! How pathetic.

When has anybody used His Name to kill? Not in recent memory. The Crusades did it; but they rode for the pope, not Christ.

goat says:
…you have a relationship with the christian religion…
Mr. Incredible says:
Christianity isn’t a “religion.” Judaism is. Catholicism is. Islam is. They think that following rules and standing on ceremony are the way to Heaven. Of course, they are not cuz you they cannot do enough to earn their way.
goat says:
…not god…
Mr. Incredible says:
It’s true that I have no relationship with “god.” I have relationship with God. You finally get it.
goat says:
you Christians need the jewish old testament…
Mr. Incredible says:
Only to put what Jesus taught in context. We have a new, better Covenant with God, through Christ. You can stay in the Old Testament, and, with that, obey each and every Law, statute, ordinance and Jewish ceremonial regulation, and, even, your own laws of “conscience”; and, if you fail in one, you fail in all.
goat says:
… so you can ignore everything jesus taught…
Mr. Incredible says:
Yes, I can. I just won’t.
goat says:
…in the old testament it says its OK to kill its OK to steal its OK to judge its OK to never follow what Jesus taught…
Mr. Incredible says:
Those who are born again love God. In that love, they wanna obey the Law even though they know, thanks to Adam and Eve, that they cannot obey 100% of the Law. That’s where repentance, then Grace, comes in.
People like you, rejecting Grace, are stuck in trying to obey the WHOLE Law, even though you can’t; and, therefore, you got no way out of that trap. The Law is the ministry of death.
goat says:
America is a christian country…
Mr. Incredible says:
Founded on biblical values and Principles.
goat says:
…and jesus is used to whip up support for killing in every war in american history…
Mr. Incredible says:
yes, He is USED by men. Christ is not at fault. Men are.
goat says:
can somebody please tell me what web site to go to for intelligent debate… where all the smart people are at…
Mr. Incredible says:
In other words, you wanna find a place where everybody agrees with YOU.
Well, the Mein Kampf “Keepin’ the Dream Alive” Community website would be a place for you to start.
How ’bout the Sturmabteilung site? They’re lookin’ for your input.
The Josef Göbbels Public Relations Instructional Academy site would welcome you.
Hey, how ’bout the Himmler Memorial Homosexual Internet Militia Headquarters site? You’d like that.
And, finally, the Goosesteppers Dance Troup [est. 1939] where you can loosen up after a hard day’s anti-semitism work.
