bart millard mercyme
There is a new album out now, by the band Mercy Me, called “Lifer”. It offers a fresh new sound that isn’t often heard from the band. One song in particular has stuck with me ever since I first heard it. It is called “Best News Ever”. It is a song about how the fight has already been done and the work has already been done for us, by God. We can have the free gift of salvation if we allow Jesus to work within our hearts and minds, as well as give Him the opportunity to work in our lives. The lyrics are as follows:
Verse 1: Some say, “Don’t give up, and hope that your good is good enough”. Head down, keep on working. If you could earn it, you deserve it. Some say, “Push on through”. After all it’s the least that you can do. But don’t buy, what they’re selling. It couldn’t be further from the truth. [Chorus]What if I were the one to tell you. That the fight’s already been won. Well, I think your day’s about to get better. What if I were the one to tell you. That the work’s already been done. It’s not good news. It’s the best news ever. The last two lines are the whole point of the song, in its entirety. It isn’t just good news that we are saved y Jesus and His love for us. It isn’t just good news that the fights already been won for us and that we are spared from the burning fires of Hell. It is the best news ever.
[Verse 2] Some say, “Don’t ask for help.” God helps the ones who help themselves. Press on, get it right. Otherwise get left behind. Some say he’s keeping score. So, try hard then try a little more. But hold up, if this were true. Explain to me what the cross is for?” This verse puts it right to the point with what people and non-believers think about God. Some people don’t ever want to ask for help when or if they need it. Some people think God only saves those who help themselves. Some people also think that their works and honorable deeds get them into Heaven. If there is ever any time to try harder, it is in this life. But a lot of people get it wrong. They think they can get into Heaven by their honorable deeds, otherwise they’ll be left behind in this life and in the next life, too. It is the wrong way of viewing things, because God doesn’t let us into Heaven by the deeds we do. He lets us have the gift of salvation in order to be allowed into Heaven.
There is so much pressure to do the right thing in the right timing in life, that people might even think that God is keeping score of all of our wrongs. But like the song says, hold on if this was true, then what is the cross really for? Jesus saved us so we could have a place to be united with Him in heaven for all eternity. [Chorus] What if I were the one to tell you. That the fight’s already been won. Well, I think your day’s about to get better. What if I were the one to tell you. That the work’s already been done. It’s not good news. It’s the best news ever. Best news ever.”  What if someone was to tell you that the work has already been done and the fight was won for you by Jesus Himself? Would that drastically change the way you view God, or the way you view other believers? Would it change the way you view salvation? Would it change the way you view what you are supposed to do in your life?
[Bridge] “So won’t you, come! Come all you weary and you burdened. You heavy laden and you hurting. For all of you with nothing left. Come and find rest!” God wants all of us to be able to come to Him without fear and without hesitation. He loves us all so much that He wants a relationship with every one of us. God wants us to come and find rest in His gentle spirit, in His word and in His loving embrace.
[Chorus] “What if I were the one to tell you. That the fight’s already been won. Well, I think your day’s about to get better. What if I were the one to tell you. That the work’s already been done. It’s not good news. It’s the best news ever! Best news ever. It’s not good news. It’s the best news ever. Best news ever. It’s not good news. It’s the best news ever!” We don’t ever have to worry about what will happen to us in our lives, because Jesus already paid the ultimate price for our sins and He wants us all as His children. That truly is the best news ever.
