“Brain dead” boy rescued from organ-harvesting doctors, recovers fully

Steven Thorpe awoke after being declared brain dead

by Joel McDurmon on Apr 26, 2012

And the moral of the story is: Always get a second opinion. Or a fifth.

The Daily Mail (UK) reports,

They were told there was no chance of their son surviving after he suffered devastating injuries in a car crash.

But Steven Thorpe’s parents refused to give up hope – despite four specialists declaring that the 17-year-old was brain dead.

Convinced they saw a ‘flicker’ of life as Steven lay in a coma, John and Janet Thorpe rejected advice to switch off his life support machine.

They begged for another opinion – and it was a decision that saved him.

A neurosurgeon found faint signs of brain activity and two weeks later, Steven woke from his coma. Within seven weeks, he had left hospital.

And four years on, the trainee accounts clerk says he owes everything to the persistence of his parents.

From his home in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, Steven, 21, said: ‘I feel so lucky that my parents wouldn’t take no for an answer.’

I am happy to hear that the boy woke from his coma. I don’t agree with the title of the article. It makes it seem like the doctors declare someone brain dead just to get their organs. It is only done when they do not see any brain activity. Doctors can make a mistakes. Having a number of opinions is the best way to go in any situation, especially one this serious. You make it seem like there is a conspiracy.

I didn’t make up the title, some news media source did, so when you use the term “YOU” – I hope you don’t mean me. My comments always begin with “Watchwoman” and end with “▬ Donna Calvin” — so you can know what I say and what I don’t. And speaking of mistakes, when a doctor makes one it can be most deadly, not conspiratorial, but deadly, nevertheless. So, let’s pray for our doctors. Amen? Amen! The little non-consequential “YOU” of a me — Donna Calvin’s — errors never could result in the deaths of so many like Rx’s do yearly, for example. I am always amazed at what people can read into my posts about me or should I say “YOU”.

This is such a wonderful wonderful story and so rare but MOM always knows best because mom and child are so connected in ways other people simply don’t understand.

GOD BLESS THE PARENTS AND THEIR SON NOW AND FOR ALL TIME AS I AM SURE HE WILL!!!

According to other accounts I have read, it seems that only the fifth doctor was a neurologist, so maybe that’s the lesson here: not that the plug should never be pulled but consult the proper doctor before doing so.

It also sounds like all they did was simply stop inducing a coma and he woke up. Wouldn’t this have been the first step in pulling the plug in any case?

This young man had only been unconscious for two or three days. I hope you are not advocating that people be kept “alive” for decades on life support systems when all tests, including those by neurologists, show brain death.
