Obama is Killing the Internet

Bad policy after bad policy.  Often illegally imposed. As a result, the Tech Sector – 1/6 of our nation’s economy, as big as health care – is hemorrhaging jobs. Tech Layoffs Hit 3-year High in First Half of 2012

And our Internet service would be better, faster and cheaper were it not for this Administration.

The damage done by taxes and regulations is often unseen.  The money wasted – either sent to government or spent complying with ridiculous over-regulation – could have instead been invested in improving and expanding existing service, nd hiring people to make it all happen.

The worst gig-and-progress-killing Administration Internet power grab of all was the December 2010 illegal imposition of Network Neutrality. Net Neutrality eviscerates private sector investment in the infrastructure necessary to maintain and continue building the World Wide Web – exactly as ObamaCare does to private sector health care.

Robert W. McChesney is the author of several books on media and politics, professor of communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, host of the weekly talk show, Media Matters, on WILL-AM radio, and cofounder of the media reform organization Free Press – <>

Which ultimately leaves us with the government as our sole Internet Service Provider (ISP) – not at all problematic from a performance or free speech perspective. How do we know this?  Because the Godfather of the Media “Reform” Movement – University of Illinois professor and avowed Marxist (please pardon the redundancy) Robert McChesney – says so:

“At the moment, the battle over network neutrality is not to completely eliminate the telephone and cable companies. We are not at that point yet. But the ultimate goal is to get rid of the media capitalists in the phone and cable companies and to divest them from control.”

Having not to the Media Marxists’ satisfaction done enough damage to the wireless Web, in April 2011 the Administration took a second poisonous bite at the apple.

Meanwhile, the Administration has serially, incessantly been an in-depth impediment to the free market business transactions that will dramatically improve and expand the Web.

This Administration hasn’t been picking Winners and Losers – they’ve been picking Losers at the expense of Winners.  It isn’t Crony Capitalism – it’s Crony Socialism.

Take the Mother-May-I government approval process for mergers and acquisitions – that applies almost exclusively to the Internet-Tech sector.  This Administration has abused the living daylights out of it.

A decision is supposed to be made within 180 days.  This Administration has time and again delayed beyond a year some of the mergers and acquisitions languishing before them.

Cell phone Winner AT&T wanted to buy cell phone Loser T-Mobile.  The Administration dragged out the process for more than thirteen months – then denied the purchase.  Which cost Winner AT&T somewhere between $3 and $6 billion – to be given to Loser T-Mobile.

When the Administration isn’t outright blocking private sector mergers, they are cramming them full of illegal “conditions.” Laws and regulations to which the parties must agree – else the Administration will deny their request.

These “conditions” are just more examples of this Administration unilaterally, unlawfully writing law – without benefit of Congress. Comcast was last year forced to swallow two dozen Administration-imposed “conditions” so as to finally – more than a year after the deal was first announced – merge with NBC-Universal.

And just last week the Administration approved Verizon’s wireless spectrum purchase from a cable company consortium – but, again, only with a whole host of illegal attending “conditions.”  That, amongst other things, “restrict…joint marketing agreements.”

So not only are these “conditions” unlawfully imposed – some of them eviscerate the First Amendment.  This Administration is telling these companies what they can and can not say.  And these companies will capitulate – else they can not do business.

All of this Obama Administration hyper-activity has frozen in amber the private sector. This Administration’s myriad of higher taxes and uber-regulatory zeal have cost us growth and job creation – and force us to pay ever higher prices for ever lesser products.

And that’s just the cost we see.  The advancement lost to the forced capitulation to Black Hole Government – where money, light and energy go in, and nothing comes out – is unseeable, unknowable – and incalculable.

Steve Birn gives background into the cover of Newsweek Magazine that I placed in this article…I think you will benefit reading this …

Obama Creates A Mainstream Press Problem For Himself
by Steven

Newsweek’s cover story this week is “Why Barack Obama Needs To Go.” The cover story is written by Niall Ferguson, a former adviser to the McCain campaign. In other words, the Newsweek cover story isn’t actually news, it’s commentary. Newsweek almost always leans to the left, so a piece of right-wing commentary appearing on the front cover is surprising. But that Newsweek places commentary on the cover rather than news perhaps in part explains the downfall of weekly news magazines. In any event, what this piece of right-wing commentary on the front cover represents is the mainstream press warning Obama about ignoring them.

Ferguson does a terrific job laying out the case against Barack Obama’s re-election. From the fact that 110 million people received welfare last year to the fact that only 50% paid income or capital gains taxes last year to the disaster of Federal debt and Obamacare Ferguson makes a strong case. At the center of that case, indeed at the center of any case against Obama, is the complete lack of experience Obama had when he entered the White House. Obama has never offered a vision to the public. He may have a vision for what he wants but he has no idea how to get there.

The real story here though is that a left-wing, mainstream publication is willing to put this sort of story on the cover. The press has grown increasingly tired of Obama mistreating them. He hasn’t taken a mainstream press reporter’s question in two months. He hasn’t held a press conference in the US since last June when he declared the private sector was doing fine. The last time he took questions was at the G20 conference in Mexico when he filibustered three questions and made absolutely no sense in his answers. One might be able to understand why he avoids the press, he makes a major gaffe ever time he talks to them.

Where the Obama campaign really goes wrong though is in its defense of interviews given to People and Entertainment Tonight. They declared those “news” outlets to be equal to the mainstream press, at least in terms of importance. The mainstream press apparently feels dissed by all of this, according to Jake Tapper. So it should surprise no one that mainstream press organizations like Newsweek are more willing to attack Obama. If he won’t speak to the mainstream press and if he pretends like entertainment news outlets are equally as important, why should the mainstream media continue to fawn over the President?

Where the Obama campaign goes wrong is in declaring the entertainment news outlets of equal importance to the White House press. It simply isn’t true and in the process Obama’s surrogates are insulting their own voters. Entertainment news isn’t equal to the White House press, local media however is. Even in that Obama manages to look distant, even with the most friendly radio host. One host in Iowa wanted restaurant suggestions for Chicago. Obama sounded like he had never been to Chicago before and offered only the most cliché restaurants. While amusing, that sort of press is important because it can be targeted.

Obama has a press problem right now. It isn’t fatal, the mainstream media is still left-wing and they’ll continue to repeat his press releases. But they’re annoyed, to the point that Newsweek has a cover story commentary arguing for Obama’s replacement as President. They’re annoyed to the point of grumbling about lack of interviews. The Obama campaign has only made matters worse, which ensures for the time being slightly less favorable treatment. The solution is to either hold a press conference or give an interview to one or two of these people. But Obama cannot afford to do that, he always seems to make a mistake that gives Romney traction. He’s in a rough place with a formerly adoring media.
