Principal Darryl Rascoe’s Decision Lauded By Some, Shot Down By Others

Condoms might be considered commonplace in New York City high schools — just last year 680,000 were distributed to students!

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – There is a condom controversy at a Brooklyn high school. On prom night, administrators are planning on handing out free condoms to students.  Condoms might be considered commonplace in New York City high schools — just last year 680,000 were distributed to students — but a principal’s plan to make them available at the prom on June 7 is raising some eyebrows.  Late Friday came word that Bedford Stuyvesant Preparatory Principal Darryl Rascoe may be re-thinking his stance, but he had yet to announce a change of heart on the hot-button issue publicly. Jarel Nicholson, a senior at the school, said he didn’t know about his principal’s plan, but agrees with it to an extent.  “I think safe sex is the best sex,” Nicholson told CBS 2’s Vanessa Murdock.  NV Healthcare, a Long Island based manufacturer, has offered free condoms to high school proms across the state, but  Bedford-Stuyvesant Prep is the only one to accept the offer so far, according to several reports.

* Some questions inquiring minds might be asking??? *

  • Do you think this is a good idea? Or not? Why or why not?
  • *
  • If you believe giving students condoms is a good idea so they are protected from unwanted consequences, then would you approve schools having the right to equip your children with defensive weapons against kidnappers, rapists, bullies, thugs, robbers and students who might bring a sharp object, brass knuckles, a knife, a gun or bomb to school?  Would you object on the grounds that your parental rights were being infringed upon if your student was equipped with a weapon?  What kind of defensive weapon would be appropriate? Justify your response.
  • *
  • Do you think giving out condoms encourages (or condones) prom attendees leaving their prom with them in their pockets to have sexual relations?
  • *
  • Do you think it would be a sexual titillating additional temptation added to an already highly emotional evening to receive a condom from the school?
  • *
  • Do you think that giving out free condoms indicates the school is encouraging students to have sexual relations?
  • *
  • If your child were going to this prom, how would you feel about him/her receiving a condom given by school officials?
  • *
  • Do you think this is subverting parental control and parental rights?
  • *
  • Do you think this is encouraging children to commit the sin of fornication?
  • *
  • Do you think this is aimed at subverting the sanctity of traditional marriage?
  • *
  • How would this have affected you at age 16-18 on your prom night? Would it have been a turn on?
  • *
  • At what age do you believe a child/teen/adult should begin to engage in outside of marriage sexual relations?
  • *
  • Do you think this is sexual child abuse?
  • *
  • Would you forbid your child to attend?
  • *
  • If your child were going to attend and get a condom, how would you handle the situation?
  • *
  • Would you organize a boycott of the prom?
  • *
  • Would you voice a complaint?  Visit the principal in person?  Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper?
  • *
  • Last, but not least, how does this Bible verse fit in with giving a condom to a hormonal teen on prom night
[Proverbs 22:6]  Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
