The Los Angeles Archdiocese is selling the chancery office building:

In his announcement, made on the archdiocese’s website, Mahony said that the insurance companies should cover "the major share" of the settlements but that the church must be prepared to pay a portion.

He said the archdiocese has assembled a list of 50 properties it could sell, starting with the 12-story building at 3424 Wilshire Blvd., which the Thrifty Payless firm donated to the church in 1995.

The structure houses offices for the archdiocese’s central administration, ministries and other services. Mahony said the archdiocese would either lease office space back from the buyer or find quarters elsewhere.

Spokane Diocese is asking for millions:

A Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization plan approved last month commits the 95,000-member diocese to pay $48 million — including $10 million from 82 parishes — to settle as many as 177 claims of previous sexual abuse. That $10 million is roughly what the parishioners normally put in the collection plate in a year.

While five dioceses around the country are struggling with similar cases, the Spokane diocese is the only one asking its parishioners to make such significant contributions toward paying the victims.

Tomorrow is a day of fasting a prayer for Christians of Pakistan. Sherry has more at Intentional Disciples:

Christians in Charsadda and Mardan, in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province, received letters on May 7, demanding that they must close their churches and convert to Islam within ten days. Although some letters did not say what the consequences would be if Christians failed to comply, others are reported to have threatened bombing or the execution of all Christians.
