If one wanted to read a critical, objective examination of Islam’s origins and the origins of the Koran, where would one go?

You know…the sort of thing that undergraduates encounter re/Christianity in Christian Origins 101, placing the people in context, tracing influences, teasing apart the text.

Does such a thing  = such an angle of exploration, such a sensibility – exist in relation to Islam?
