The Bishop of Lexington rode the bus with other March for Life attendees…

Some bishops fly to the rally, but Gainer prefers to take the scenic route. "It’s not all that comfortable, but I find it fun and invigorating to be around with the people," he said.

On the way home, he’ll ride with a bus carrying Lexington Catholic High School’s anti-abortion group.

The students look forward to spending time with the bishop, said LCHS theology teacher Otto Piechowski.

Abortion was a lower-profile issue under Gainer’s predecessor. Bishop J. Kendrick Williams spoke out in Frankfort against abortion, but never joined the January trek to Washington, local anti-abortion activists said.

Gainer, on the other hand, has signed up every year since he was installed in 2003 (although a snowstorm forced cancellation of last year’s trip).

"I go out of a personal conviction, but also out of the idea that my example can help to teach and lead," Gainer said.
