Here’s something fascinating to a few of us..

Apparently a Major Catholic Publisher of high school religion texts has, in the light of the bishop’s Ad Hoc Committee that declares texts in compliance with the Catechism, or not, decided to just give up.

(Link goes to pdf version of texts currently declared in compliance. A short explanation – The committee declares texts in compliance. It is then up to individual bishops to use the list. They are not required to. What is required is that all texts have an imprimateur. How can a text have an imprimatur but found not to be in compliance? Mostly by omission. The imprimatur declares that there is nothing contrary to faith in the book. But it may omit issues, etc. that the committee believes are necessary for a full presentation of the faith.)

They’re not going to develop any more texts or even attempt to revise their old ones to bring them into compliance. This publisher was one of the major players in the field, had lots of high school texts used by lots of schools, but only a few (maybe 2 out of 9 or something) had been found in compliance. They’ve apparently sent out a 3-page letter explaining their decision – I’ve not yet seen it, but it would be interesting to see the letter’s tone and stance towards the bishops.
