The Perfect Diamond with a Scratch: A Story of Hope and Healing

This short story, first told in the 19th century, continues to bring comfort and healing. We can use it every day of our lives.

This beautiful tale reminds me that how we perceive life’s events often determines whether they weigh us down or lift us up. The Rabbi did not polish out the scratch, he used it to create a new facet of beauty within the diamond. He did not deny or cover up the reality of the diamond’s flaw, indeed, he used it to point to a greater beauty, the beauty of transformation. So, too, I have learned that my large heart surgery scar is not something to be embarrassed about. It is a testimony to the medical genius that saved my life, and a visible sign of God’s grace in my journey. I have made friends with my scar, as the King learned to appreciate the scratch in his diamond. Thank you, Rabbi Moffic, for another memorable tale!

The Healing Power of Laughter: The Jewish Genius of Robin Williams
In Jewish tradition we have a special greeting for a genius. Upon meeting such a person, we say, Blessed are You, Eternal God, Source of Life, who has given from His wisdom to flesh and blood.  Had I ever met Robin Williams, I would surely have said it. Williams was a singular genius. He brought
