The second commandment is, “You shall not for yourself an idol in any form of anything.”  In biblical times people worshipped many different things, from golden and bronze statues to cows and monkeys.  Some worship toads or the sun and moon.  We are not to make anything that could become and idol.

Other religions worship idols, like Buddha and molded creatures form the sea, snakes and dragons.  The children of Israel made a golden calf to worship when they tired of waiting to Moses to come down from Mount .  They couldn’t see or feel the God he spoke of, so they wanted something they could touch. They gathered together their gold and melted it into the form of a calf.  Then they could see what the were worshiping.

God was not happy!!

People today don’t necessarily actually make themselves idols, although they can.  We are more likely to allow some other thing to take our focus away from God. When we look to other things for our peace, our hope, our solutions to life’s difficulties, we are creating idols.  Believing that the Internet has all our answers is making it like God.  The Internet is very useful and one can find a lot of information there, but only God knows all things, understands all things, and controls all things.

The best weatherman in the world cannot make it rain, but God can.  The best doctor in the universe cannot heal your body, but God can.  Only He can build up mountains and tear down whole cities with one strong wind.  Only God can shake the earth and bring destruction to one home and never touch the little hut at it’s side.

Our God is all knowing, all powerful, all loving, and full of grace and mercy.  He knows us inside out because He put us together in our mother’s womb.  He understand our emotions and how our brains work.  He knows just what we need before we even do.   Why would anyone want to create another god?
