Have you seen the recent television commercial for AT&T movie downloads?  It shows a family, parents and two children.  The children are both under 12 years old, or so it would seem.  They sit on the sofa listening to their parents.  There is only one movie download left and they are about to decide who gets to choose it.

The little girl is pretty, with long beautiful hair.  She looks as if she has been sitting on the sofa all day trying to keep her posture perfect.  The smaller boy has a mountain of unruly curls and you can tell he has been playing.

First they talk about the  wonderful attributes of their daughter.  Then they decide their son should get some credit for his curls.  Next they are loudly proclaiming that they both love their daughter more, so she should get to choose the movie.

Shame on you AT&T!  You should know better.  What is this telling children across America?  It is not okay to love one child more than another.  It is not okay to make fun of their hair.  It is not okay to have this kind of conversation in front of our children!  I know some families do have these kinds of conversations, but PLEASE do it behind closed doors.

How we expect the next generation to grow up with confidence if we tear them apart so openly?   Parents are supposed to love and nurture all their children.  We are to teach them right from wrong and how to be kind to one another.  Parents are to protect their children from the hurtful things they face each day, not be the cause of them.

We are to raise them in the fear and admonition of the Lord.  We are to guide them.  We are to pray for them and lead them to Jesus Christ.  Our children are our greatest treasure.  They are like jewels in a crown.  I know AT&T doesn’t share these convictions, but couldn’t they be more sensitive in relating to these young ones?
