Malaria vs. Swine Flu in the Media [video]

posted by Tom Davis

Remember the swine flu?

Take a look at this breakdown of media coverage, comparing the number of stories devoted to the swine flu vs. malaria during the same time period.

Imagine for a moment that all of those media stories were about malaria, and the impact that a $10 bed net can have on the malaria infection rate?

I think part of what this shows is how desensitized we become. Swine flu was new news, malaria has been around for a long time. I recently heard Princess Zulu speak about HIV/AIDs and the lack of attention it is getting now, yet I remember when it was the first wide spread health communication to every home in America.
The question is raises for me is bigger than this one issue. How can we change hearts, open eyes, and move people to live ongoing with hearts the care and lives that work for change? The passion of my heart is to encourage, advocate, empower, and uplift the church to live out a faith that transforms the world through caring for issues like health care, orphans, poverty, and injustice because those affected by these things will often have great difficulty hearing and receiving the Gospel until the practical immediate needs in their lives have been responded to.
I pray our hearts break for those things that break God’s heart, but I also pray we live in response to that instead of becoming desensitized.
