Take delight in the Lord,

and he will give you your heart’s desires. (Psalm 37:4)

“God is sovereign,” is a phrase I hear often these days. It’s thrown around as if to say, God does whatever He does, and it’s none of our business. While it is true that God is Sovereign, it is also true of us, made in his image. He has given us sovereign rule over our own destinies. He doesn’t interfere without invitation.

“He will give you the desires of your heart” is a precious promise, but it’s null and void without my role and yours:  to delight in the Lord. Herein is a key to answered prayer. Do you have a heart’s cry that is stuck? You have asked but haven’t seen an answer? Perhaps it’s time to increase your delight index. We are invited and instructed to delight in God. Why, we wonder? Because God is delightful. And He delights in us. (Psalm 37:24) So why not meditate on the delightful qualities of God today? Turn your face to His and smile at His goodness, kindness, and mercy. Give Him thanks and honor today for Who He is, and watch the power of gratitude and praise go to work on your behalf. Let’s believe God for breakthrough in the areas of our lives that desperately need Him.

Father,

I delight in You today, your kindness, your beauty, your creation, your forgiveness, and the beautiful gifts you have lavished on me. Thank You! I shall take this thought, this meditation, with me all day long – I will delight in You, smile when I consider you, whisper my love and gratitude between meetings, phone calls, tasks, and appointments.

I love you.

I delight in You.

Thank you for teaching me this truth, and I receive in faith the answers to my earnest prayers.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
