I am going to go out on a limb here and make an observation about Oprah’s Favorite Things 2010 list that may not be taken favorably. In fact, y’all might get mad at me, but I’m going to have to take that risk. Because I can’t believe my eyes! And I do believe that this is why we as a nation are getting fatter and fatter.
Think about how often the word “should” comes up in your thoughts. “I should do this; I should do that. I must do this; I must do that. I have to do this; I have to do that.” All day long, we are shouting (yes, SHOUTING) orders at ourselves.
When leading a workshop at Omega Institute for Holistic Studies, my question to the group – “How do you know when you are sated?” – was met with dead silence. People looked at me like I was from Mars. I asked again, “How do you know when you sated? You know, when you are no longer hungry. How do you know when it’s time to stop eating?” “Ohhhhh …” said one of the participants. “When the Biggest Loser is over.”

The body needs time to rest and repair. If your body doesn’t get the rest it needs, it basically “believes” that it is under constant threat. If you are under prolonged stress, your body refuses to give up stored fuel. Fat is designed as a storage tank for energy, and regular rest allows the body to slow down and release storage fats.
