“Katrina Pounds”: Broken Zippers, Broken Dreams

Devastation, Hopelessness, FEMA Food and Fat… Three years later. by Janice Taylor, Renegade Weight Loss Coach, Cert. Hypnotist, Author, Columnist, Blogger and 50-pound big-time-loser. (Write Janice for Free Consult)

On August 23, 2005, Hurricane Katrina pounded her way through the Gulf. The devastation left many with long-lasting feelings of hopelessness, as their homes and businesses were destroyed and their lives ripped out from underneath them. Some of the Gulf residents were moved to other states, some into trailers; some remain, three years later, in those same trailers. Many fell into states of deep depression and despair, and the suicide rate has nearly tripled.
And another side of the story has come to light: weight gain – also known as “Katrina Pounds” – is at epidemic proportions.

Janice Taylor talks with Sister Julia, manager of Pauline Books & Media, Daughters of St. Paul, in Metairie, Louisiana.

Janice: Hi Sister Julia. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me and paint a picture of what life was like in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. I understand that you were one of the first to return to the area affected by Katrina.
Sister Julia: Yes, I was one of the first to return. We were relatively lucky, as our carport blew away, an air conditioner toppled and while the area was completely flooded and homes and businesses destroyed, the water only came up to the last step of the entrance to our bookstore. Some think it was a miracle.
Janice: I would imagine that the entire experience was surreal.
Sister Julia: It truly was. We did what we had to do. A certain kind of numbness set in.
Janice: Were you depressed?
Sister Julia: I am a musician, so you can well understand that music is very important to me; part of my every day life. I didn’t think of myself as depressed, yet for an entire year I had no desire to sing or play my instruments. I was too tired to even listen to music. And I wasn’t taking good care of myself. The feeling was ‘what’s the use?’
Janice: How did you begin to create a new ‘normal?’
Sister Julia. The new normal centered around eating. The grocery stores didn’t have a whole lot to choose from. There were special meals from FEMA that I tried once or twice, but they tasted like field rations, making life that much more depressing. Some companies generously sent foods, but for the most part, they were crispy type snacks (mostly unhealthy). And to make matters worse, 75% of the people lived in trailers, which were equipped with tiny little stoves. And there were some safety issues around the stoves. People were afraid to turn them on. Imagine, losing everything being reduced to field rations, a trailer equipped with a non-working stove and a few crispy treats.
Janice: How did you cope?
Sister Julia: We all and I mean all, headed to what few restaurants were open. Eating out was a sign of getting back to ‘normal.’ The lines were out the door and sometimes around the block. But we were desperate for life, and going out to dinner presented an opportunity to talk to each other, share our stories. Albeit a tiny piece of normal, eating out was the only ‘normal’ thing to do. It was an every night occurrence.
All restaurant meals here start with roux (a mixture of flour and fat). It’s comforting, of course and delicious. So, it was roux every night, all nights.

Janice: Is that when “Katrina Pounds” started to take hold?
Sister Julia: Absolutely, although we weren’t aware of it at the time. We were numb and not paying attention to the scale. We were just getting through, one day at a time – one roux dish at a time.
Janice: When did you realize that you were gaining weight and that it was a bit of a phenomenon in the area?
Sister Julia: Recovery is slow. People are still in trailers, so we are still recovering.
It took me close three years to get back on the scale. I was shocked to learn that I’d gone from 160 pounds to 179.5. It was a slow and steady gain. Insidious and easy not to notice, until it’s there! And that seems to be what’s happening now, with others.

One by one residents are starting to wake up to the fact that they have gained large amounts of weight. They are coming into the bookstore and talking to me about their weight gain. Showing me how they have added safety pins to their pants’ and skirts’ waistlines. There are quite a few broken zippers! It seems a phenomenon of epidemic proportions. We refer to it as “Katrina Pounds.” “How many Katrina Pounds have you gained?”
It’s a vicious cycle. A community of people who are depressed and feeling hopeless, finding comfort in food; and now they are feeling depressed about their weight, their health and energy. It adds to the depression.

Our Women’s Bible Study group meets on Thursday nights, and we sometimes discuss the phenomenon of Katrina Pounds. Our clothes don’t fit.
When I read your book, “All Is Forgiven, Move On,” I realized that we are on the same page in many ways. Making conscious choices, being nice to ourselves, the importance of laughter … all important to me personally and there are parallels in the Bible.
Janice: What can we do to help ‘lighten?’ Support those who want to permanently let go of those Katrina Pounds and those who just want to lighten up their spirits?
I know of many who would be happy to lend a helping hand.
Sister Julia: I will let those who ask know that support is available. Just knowing that there are people out there who are ready and willing to help us ‘lighten’ up, as you say, is comforting. You are welcome to come and visit, as well.
Janice: Thank you, Sister Julia. And, I will take you up on that offer! See you soon, in Metairie.

The Belly Fat Cure: Three Punch Knock-Out (Recipes Included)

Belly Fat Leads to More Belly Fat by Janice Taylor, Life & Wellness Coach, Cert. Hypnotist, Author, Columnist and 50-pound big-time-loser. Write Janice for Free Consult!
Despite my (successful) diet attempts, healthy lifestyle, prayers and screams, my mid-section has grown a section of its own! YIKES! This weight loss guru can’t have that happen! What to do? Research belly fat, fight back and knock those mid-section fatties outta’ here!
It’s all in the Why Me “Y!”
Researchers have found that fat cells in the abdomen produce a hormone called neuropeptide Y (NPY), an appetite stimulant previously believed to originate form the brain.
Belly Fat Cure
Fortunately, scientists have found that certain foods do fight belly fat. Three big claps for the scientists! (Clap! Clap! Clap!)
#1 punch … Whole Grain Foods
Studies show that those who incorporate whole grains, cereals and other foods into their diets tend to lose more fat from their abdomens than those who eat only refined-grain foods. You know, the ‘white’ stuff.
Brown Rice Bites!
This recipe incorporates all three knock-out-fat ingredients! Plus hot and spicy salsa! (Research shows that hot and spicy foods support your weight loss efforts, as well!)
Ingredients:
3 cups cooked brown rice, cooled
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese, lite
2 eggs
4 egg whites
1 16-oz. jar HOT Salsa, thick and chunky style
1/2 cup 2% plain yogurt (Greek is best!)
salt and pepper to taste
3/4 cup crushed corn chips, organic
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large mixing bowl, combine rice and cheese; set aside.
In medium bowl, beat eggs until well blended.
Stir in salsa, yogurt, salt and pepper.
Add salsa mixture to rice and cheese; mix well.
Spray mini-muffin pans with cooking spray.
Spoon in rice mixture, to just below the rim.
Sprinkle crushed chips on top; gently press into mixture.
Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until golden brown. YUM!
#2 punch … Low-Fat Milk and Yogurt
Research shows that the more calcium in the fat cells, the more the fat cells burn fat. So, load up on calcium rich foods!
Like Hummus:
My neighbor says, “Hummus is like crack to me. I love it!” I concur! Here’s a ‘low-cal’ totally healthy version that features yogurt. Again, I so prefer the Greek kind.
Ingredients:
1 15 oz can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans, drained (save liquid)
4 cloves garlic, crushed
juice from one freshly squeezed lemon
2 tablespoons low-fat peanut butter
3/4 cup 2% plain yogurt (Greek)
1 teaspoon cumin
a pinch of salt (to taste)
Instructions:
In blender combine all ingredients, blend until smooth and creamy. If it is too thick, add a bit of the liquid from the chick peas.
#3 punch … Lean Protein
Lean proteins, eggs and beans, help to keep you feeling full longer, increase your energy, which in turn helps you to burn belly fat.
Jane’s Ginger-Lemon Chicken
My friend, Jane, shared this recipe with me. It’s delicious, healthy, easy to whip up, and it’s an easy clean-up!
Ingredients:
12 oz. chicken breasts, skinless and boneless
1/3 c. coarsely cut fresh cilantro
1/2-inch piece fresh ginger
grated peel of 1/2 lemon
2 cloves minced garlic
juice from 1/2 lemon
2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. olive oil
Instructions:
Combine ingredients in a food processor and then baste on the chicken as it broils.
About six minutes per side.
Enjoy!

Fatty Liver: Might YOU Have One?

Causes of Fatty Liver.jpgTry On Health: See how it fits! by Janice Taylor, Life & Wellness Coach, Cert. Hypnotist, Author, Columnist, 50-pound big-time-loser. (Write Janice for Free Consultation)
Fatty Liver Disease
This past week, Kick in the Tush Club member Pat L. wrote me and told me that she has “Fatty Liver.” I was concerned. I care about Pat (she has been a loyal KITT Club member for quite some time), so I did a bit of research.
Fatty Liver a.k.a. Fatty Liver Disease (FLD), steatorrhoeic hepatosis, or steatosis hepatitis, is a serious disease that compromises your all-important liver. Essentially, it is as its name implies. There is a build-up of excess fat in the liver cells. The good news is that Fatty Liver is a reversible condition!
Fatty Liver is associated both with excessive alcohol intake and obesity.
Symptoms: One thing you should know is that Fatty Liver is not easily detected, since fatty liver does not produce symptoms on its own. It can go undetected for years. As it worsens you may experience fatigue, weight gain, abdominal discomfort, weakness and confusion.
Diagnosis: The only way to know for sure is to get a liver biopsy. Initially, however, your doctor may detect something unusual in your blood test or notice that your liver is slightly enlarged during a routine checkup.
Treatment: The great news is that you can turn this disease around by eating healthfully and by slowly and permanently removing excess weight. (If you lose it; you will find it)
Easy Enough? You might read this and say, “that’s easy. I’ll just choose healthy eating.” Thing is, healthy eating takes conscious effort and determination. You have to plan meals, stock the house with the ‘right’ stuff, and practice saying ‘no’ to a bunch of foods that you have been eating (or drinking) for decades.
Trying On Health: Still it is your CHOICE! You are the sole person responsible for what goes into your mouth!
You can continue to be a person who holds onto bad food choices that may create illness (sorry, but if you are holding on to poor food choices and feeding your liver fat, you could very well be creating disease); or you can be a person who moves into their “Picture Perfect Future ™!”
More than food for thought; this is food for life!
As a Life & Wellness Coach, I emphasize CHOICE. Making choices that are not only right for TODAY, right NOW, but that are also in alignment with your compelling future.
So, please, whether you have Fatty Liver or not, do take a moment to choose wisely for today and tomorrow!

Consciousness: An Artful Puzzle Worth Pondering

Click to Mix and Solve
Optical Delusion of Consciousness by Janice Taylor, Life & Wellness Coach, Cert. Hypnotist, Author, Columnist, 50-pound big-time-loser and artist, was inspired by the following quote from Albert Einstein. (write Janice for free consultation)
“A human being is a part of a whole, called by us ‘universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest… a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” ~ Albert Einstein
