LOVE Pure and Simple: No Sugar Coating Necessary

“Joy” says it best! by Janice Taylor, Life & Wellness Coach, Cert. Hypnotist, Author, Columnist, 50 pound big-time-loser.

Here follows an e-mail from Joy, a Kick in the Tush Club member, and fan of Our Lady of Weight Loss.
Please take a time to read it and learn from it. The message is simple and sweet as can be without sugar!

Dear Our Lady of Weight Loss
~ My sister called and said they were on their way home from the doctor. My niece, Maya, had just gotten shots and was not happy. She was crying real tears. My sister thought a kiss from Aunt Joy might make her feel better.
As I was heading down the stairs to meet them, I thought to myself “I could take her a piece of candy. That would make her feel better. Maybe I have a cracker or something…No, I don’t want to make her think food is the answer or will make her feel better. Just go.”
So I went to the car. She was fussy and didn’t really want to talk to me. Then I thought of the fountains at the courthouse across the street. She loves water. “Maya, do you want to go see the water!?”
I took her from her car-seat. When she saw the water, she screamed “WA!!” Her face lit up, and she started doing this thing with her fingers, like she was snapping them.
At first, she wasn’t sure about the fountain, the water … so I put my hand in and dripped it on her hand a couple of times. Then she wanted to put her hand in. I helped her lay on her belly, and she splashed and got water on her face. She was so excited!!
When I put her back in the car, she started fussing again. But I knew I had taken a step toward doing “I feel bad” differently and had not instilled “food is the answer” into her young 18 month old mind. ~ Love, Joy
Well done! Joy!!!! Food is not the answer!

Oats: Exfoliate, Ingest or Sow?

ART-oatmeal-scrub.jpgOats: Grown in the U.S.A. by Janice Taylor, Life & Wellness Coach, Cert. Hypnotist, Author, Columnist and 50-pound Big-Time-Loser!
History: As long ago as 7,000 B.C. – in ancient China – man was cultivating his oats (not sowing them). The ancient Greeks were the first people known to have cooked up a bowl of porridge (cereal) from oats. In 1602, a sea captain planted oats on one of the islands off the coast of Massachusetts, thus introducing oats to the Americas.
Today, nearly half of the world’s oat crop–more than 4 billion bushels a year–is grown in the United States and Canada.
Health: Oatmeal is a product made by processing oats. It is a whole grain, and its health benefits are many.
Studies conducted over the past forty years demonstrate that ingesting 3g of soluble fiber daily from oatmeal, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.
There are a number of heart healthy components at play in oatmeal, including soluble fiber, beta-glucan and antioxidants. They reduce cholesterol by reducing the ability of blood cells to stick inside the artery walls, which in effect stops plaque from forming. (When plaque forms, the diameter of the blood vessels narrow and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.)
Rolled vs. Steel: Rolled oats a.k.a. old-fashioned oatmeal are oat groats that are steamed, rolled, and flaked so that they cook quickly. They’re often cooked as a breakfast cereal, added raw to granola or muesli mixes, or used to make oatmeal cookies. Regular rolled oats take about five minutes to cook. If you’re in a hurry, try quick oats or instant oats. These have thinner flakes, so they cook faster.
Steel-cut oats a.k.a. Irish oatmeal and Scotch oatmeal are groats that have been chopped into small pieces. They’re chewier than rolled oats, and grain aficionados often prefer them for hot oatmeal cereals and muesli. (Our Lady is a big fan of steel oats as is Oprah! They have sooo much in common!)
So, yes, oatmeal for breakfast – a fabulous and smart heart healthy choice.
Exfoliate: AND – did you know that oatmeal is a very soothing grain for the skin?! Those who suffer from psoriasis and eczema appear to find some relief from itching, pain and redness, and oatmeal makes for a great exfoliate.
Exfoliates are materials with irregular textures that are used to release debris which collect on the skin’s surface. Sometimes oatmeal is mixed in with our soaps, adding texture. The grainy lather removes dirt and dead skin as it stimulates our healthy cells.
Our sweat glands and sebaceous glands rid our bodies of waste and toxins through the skin. External pollutants also get trapped on the skin’s surface. (Not a pretty thought.) So lather up, exfoliate and cleanse on a regular basis.

Got the End of Summer Blues? The One Minute Cure

ART overcomer.jpg
I’ve got the “End of Summer Blues” and I’ve got ‘em bad! by Janice Taylor, Life & Wellness Coach, Cert. Hypnotist, Author, Columnist and 50-pound Big-Time-Loser.
As the light days of summer shorten, and the temperature moves from hot to warm to cool to cold, so goes my heart.
How is it that the end of summer sends a good many of us spiraling down into the abyss, extra layer of clothing in one hand, donut in the other?

From Sad to Overcomer- The One MInute Cure!

There are different reasons that we are oh so sad. Let’s take a look at our “suffering syndromes,” and then make that all important conscious shift to energized overcomer!
Our Suffering Syndromes:
1. RSMS – Return to School Mentality Syndrome: Some of us are actually returning to school, as teacher and/or student, or to work after an extended summer vacation. And for some leave ‘early’ Fridays are over. And some of us (I’m guessing most of us) have the belief indelibly etched deeply into our minds that summer marks the ‘end of freedom.’ Ugh!
2. SDS – Short Days Syndrome – The days are shorter; less light. Although September may be lovely, we know that winter is soon to come. A time when we tend to be less active and social. Ugh!
3. SPS – Squandered Plans Syndrome – Some are disappointed because they didn’t get to do all the things that they had planned to do this summer. Whether it was to go to South America, take the Circle Liner around Manhattan (over-rated), or clean out their closets. Ugh!
4. AURS – Agreed Upon Reality Syndrome. People are walking around talking about just how their energy is beginning to wane, how they have the blues, how sad they are (including me; guilty!) Double Ugh!
5. SSS – Summer Style Syndrome. Summer is free, easy, light-weight and it costs less to look good. A simple pair of sandals vs. thigh high insulated boots! UGH!
Be an OVERCOMER! Find something to be in happy about in less than one minute.
1. ISC – Identify Shift Cure. Rather than identifying with “Suffer,”be an “Overcomer.” YAY!
2. SURDC: Soak Up Remaining Days Cure. Truth be told, autumn is quite possibly the most beautiful and comfortable time of year. Get out there, soak up the sun, go for a walk (or two or three), have a BBQ. Make sure you make the most of September and October, so you don’t feel that you squandered the fall! YAY!
3. APJC – The Autumn Photo-Journalist Cure! Capture the last days of summer and the turning leaves of autumn on film. Press some of those gorgeous fallen leaves in a book. You can spend the winter sorting through your pics and creating an amazingly beautiful ‘remembrance album.’ YAY!
4. HWEC – Happy Winter Events Cure. Make a long list of things that you are looking forward to doing this winter. You might include Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, St. Valentine’s Day, and Pi Day (March 14 – a favorite in our house) on your list, as well as a possible vacation to a warm place J. Perhaps you can find the time to sign up for that Rumba class you’ve always wanted to take; painting class; healthy cooking class; Photoshop class. YAY!
5. WSC – Winter Style Cure. Layer-Up! Wear colorful scarves and hats. Accessorize up the kazoo! Put those little heat pads for your pockets in your pockets! Woo Hoo, my energy is really starting to pick up! I see shopping in my future! YAY!
Be an Overcomer!!

Boost Happiness: Serve Life with A Cherry On Top (JigSaw Sundae)

Click to Mix and Solve
I’ll Have a Platterful of Life, Pretty Please with a Cherry On Top! by Janice Taylor, Life & Wellness Coach, Cert. Hypnotist, Author, Columnist, Teacher and 50-pound big-time-loser.
This week’s Jiggy JigSaw Sundae (oops, Freudian typo) is served with a Cherry on Top.

faToid: The leading variety of Cherries is Bing. It was first developed in Oregon, just 100 years ago, by a pioneer grower. This pioneer named the cherry after one of his Chinese workmen!

As summer comes to an end, and a part of me begins to feel ‘blue’ (I LOVE summer and I’m hanging onto it for dear life through October, at the very least.), I decided to serve up this holiday weekend with a Cherry on Top, metaphorically speaking.
In doing so, I inadvertently stumbled upon a fun and easy way to boost happiness. Here’s how it works. You simply embrace the theme of adding a ‘Cherry on Top’ to each and every aspect of your day. Just one little extra somethin’ somethin’ to make it a little more special!
Here follows a couple of thing I did yesterday to add a ‘cherry on top.’ Who knows what today will bring!!
1. The Sounds of Silence. It is my habit to jump out of bed, brew a strong cup of joe and get busy. But today, I added a silent cherry. I made my coffee, poured it into a cherry red mug and sat in silence. Wow, what a gift! The sounds of silence!
2. Candles Burning Everywhere. Instead of lighting one or two aromatherapy candles, I lit a forrest of them in my living room last night. What an extraordinary treat – the sight and smell!
3. Heavy on the Exotic Relish. I went hog wild and splurged on gourmet relish for the weekend. It was stupid expensive, but you know what … it added taste, color and fun to my veggie burger!
4. Leopard Spots. In route to a party, we passed an outlet mall and made a quick hard right. Screech! I treated myself to a few pairs of leopard panties!
5. Flowers Everywhere. While strolling the local Farmer’s Market, I picked up 3 (yup, count ‘em 3) bouquets of flowers. When I got home I separated them into ten smaller bouquets, put them in vases and carefully placed them throughout my home. Wow! A happy burst of color, texture and nature’s beauty everywhere!! Quite the Cherry!
How will you add a Cherry On Top to your day?
Please comment below. So FUN to hear your thoughts!

Hello Tushkateers,  This morning, I woke up with money on my mind.  It could be because this past Tuesday was April 15, Tax Day.  It could be because yesterday’s mail delivery was chock-full of bills.  Or, it could be because as I was drifting off to sleep, a lottery commercial was airing.  (
