People tell me that they “deserve” cake, or a burger or fries, or a binge. They tell me that they have had a stressful day and “deserve” to, in effect, go hog wild!
When you use food to comfort yourself, as a source of friendship and love, or as entertainment, you are actually denying yourself what you truly deserve.
A client told me that she loves to come home after a difficult day at work and squirrel away into the quiet corner of her family room, with a sugared-up coffee and donut.
I asked her, “What does this do for you?” “What are you looking for?” … she realized that she was looking for a calm corner to relax. She deserved to relax. She deserved to love herself; to find comfort in a comfortable chair and take in deep breaths. She deserved to let go of the day. She deserved to embrace her feelings and herself.
Before you give into the ‘devil’s food’ and this type of ‘false idol’ thinking (yes, food is a false idol; worship something on a higher plane, please), please take a moment to pause, reflect and observe.
Ask yourself, “What will this food give me?” “What am I looking for?” “Is there something I need more than food?” Identity the real need.
YOU, my friend, DESERVE (weigh) BETTER!
