12 Tips: How to have a great conversation

I realized, while schmoozing at a party, that I was having such a good time talking to everyone, one by one, sometimes two at a time, that food became secondary. Before I knew it, the evening was over, and I’d only ingested a small bowl of chili and some fruit. I didn’t have anything to confess to Our Lady of Weight Loss. Miracles do happen!!!
I invite you to work the room, chit the chatter, and leave the chips and dips behind. The ability to be a great conversationalist can be cultivated. Here follows a few conversational tips that you might want to mull over.
Talking Tips for Great Conversationalists from Our Lady of Delightful Dialogue
1. A conversation is not a monologue. Limit yourself to 4 sentences or 40 seconds, whichever comes FIRST.
2. Silence is golden. Just as a pause is important in music – so is a bit of silence in a conversation. Give others an opportunity to jump right in.
3. Be interested in the other person. Be attentive. Ask them questions. Draw them out.
4. Do not offer advice. Hello, did anyone ask you for your opinion?
5. Look for visual signs. If you see any eye-rolling, clock watching, foot tapping – you’ve overstepped your bounds and more than likely your time limit.
6. You don’t have to be right. No, really – you don’t.
7. Stick to the topic at hand and roll with it.
8. Don’t tell jokes unless you are truly skilled at it.
9. Be tactful, alert and sympathetic.
10. Always be in good humor. No matter what!
11. Don’t preach or take yourself too seriously. Do not dwell on moral issues.
12. Be positive. Negative talk will make you a negative person. (YIKES! We don’t want that to happen, do we?)

Off-the-Couch Cooking: 3 fat-melting, to-die-for, recession-proof dishes that you can whip up fast!

“The more time a nation devotes to food preparation at home, the lower its rate of obesity. In fact, the amount of time spent cooking predicts obesity rates more reliably than female participation in the labor force or income.” ~ Michael Pollan, Out of the Kitchen, Onto the Couch, The New York Times Magazine, August 7, 2009.
If cooking, as many anthropologists and social scientists believe, is the key to our humanity, separating us from the ‘beasts,’ what is the decline in cooking doing to our culture, to our lives?
Well, it ain’t good! Harvard economists found that the decline of home cooking can explain a good portion of the increase in obesity in America.
What to do? Kick Tush in the Kitchen
Here follows three healthy, low-fat, low-cal recipes that you can cook up with consciousness as you metaphorically pat yourself on the back for keeping the humanity going. (Metaphorically, because I don’t want you to burn anything while cooking!)
Organic Beef Betty Casserole
Ingredients
1/2 lb. ground beef (Organic beef)
2 teaspoons Olive Oil
1 med. Sweet onion, Vidalia chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
1 red pepper, chopped
5 tomatoes, diced
3 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp. Oregano
1/2 tsp. Basil (fresh – I have some growing in my living room!)
3/4 lb. zucchini, sliced thin
Parmesan cheese
Instructions:
In pan, sauté ground beef in oil until lightly browned. Drain excess fat. Add onion, green and red peppers, tomatoes, garlic, oregano and basil. Cook until thick. Arrange zucchini slices on bottom and sides of shallow 1-quart baking dish. Cover with meat sauce, sprinkle with cheese. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 20 minutes.
***
Cabbage Surprise Casserole (The surprise is that it tastes oh so good!)
Ingredients:
1 sm. head green cabbage
1 pint of fresh mushrooms
1 medium Sweet Onion
3/4 lb. ground beef (Organic Beef)
1 can tomato soup (Amy’s Organics)
1 cup of vegetable stock (Organic!)
1/2 c. rice, uncooked
Instructions:
Cut cabbage into chunks, this way and that way. Go hog-wild on the creativity. You can consider it the crust – so don’t dice it; again chunky style. Place in greased 9 x 13 inch pan (I use olive oil spray). Brown meat and onion; drain. Stir in rice and mushrooms. Pour over cabbage. Mix soup and water. Pour over rest of mixture. Bake covered 1-1/2 hours at 350 degrees.
***
Popeye and The Virgin Casserole
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon virgin olive oil
1/4 c. chopped onions
3 cloves garlic, fresh.
1 lb. fresh sliced mushrooms
3 cups of spinach, sauted
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
Instructions:
Sauté onions and garlic in olive oil. Add salt n’ pepper to taste. Spray bottom of square baking dish with vegetable spray or olive oil. Line bottom of dish with onion mixture. Layer with 1/2 of cheese. Cover with mushrooms. Cover with rest of cheese. Bake in 350 degree oven for 15 minutes. Serve hot. Serves 4 to 6
Alternatively, sauté all vegetables in pan. Mix 1/2 the parmesan with vegetables. Put on dish; sprinkle the other half of the parmesan on the plate. Serve with whole wheat pasta.

diets don’t work … Listening Does.

Weight Loss Coach logo.jpgWhat does your body have to say about how you are living your life and the foods you are stuffing into her? Do you know? Or have you been overriding the sound judgment that your body has been trying to express?
Be a Good ‘Body’ Listener.
How often do you really listen to your body? How often do you hear her moan and groan, “I’m stuffed, you can stop now,” but you choose to ignore her? How often does the sight or smell of food drown out her words of wisdom? How often do you drift off into a sugar-glazed coma?
It takes practice to be a good ‘body listener,’ but in being one you are not only sending a message to your body that you care, you are also putting yourself in a much better position to act responsibly.
Open Your Ears and Listen
Your assignment for today is to practice ‘intentional listening.’ Plan to sit with yourself before breakfast, lunch and dinner, if even just for a minute or two or three if you can. Close your eyes and respectfully ask your body, “How are you feeling today? Are you getting what you need? How can I help you? I am truly listening.”
The Power Within
Just sit. Just listen. Make yourself available … to you! All the answers you need are within you and your body is just waiting for you to stop and listen! You may not have realized the power of listening yet, but this exercise will prove it to you.
