National Donut Day: Our Lady of Weight Loss takes on Krispy Kreme!

Art Avocado Angel2.jpg
As an antidote to National Donut Day, Our Lady of Weight Loss gave a shout out to the Angel of Avocado. “HELP! Send a healthy recipe, now! Look what the big chains – Dunkin’ Donuts, Krispy Kreme – are doing to our people? Giving out free donuts?! They’re not really free, if you get my drift! Oy Vey, it’s unbelievable.”
The Avocado Angel responded immediately with an amazing recipe that will delight and help to make you healthy! You are ‘bigger’ than the call of the donut. Don’t give in! Get Political: Be Healthy!!!
The Avocado Angel presents a
Super Summer Salad:
Two fruits are better than one!
Interestingly enough, the two main ingredients of this super summer salad are both fruits, though they are thought by many to be vegetables.
True fruits come from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant. Therefore, both tomatoes and avocados are fruits!
Avocado: This fruit is harvested from tall tress, which grow in groves in tropical climates such as Mexico, California, Hawaii and Florida. Its rich, pale yellow-green flesh has a smooth-buttery texture with a faintly nutty flavor.
Tomato: This fruit is a member of the nightshade or Solanaceae family, a cousin to the eggplant, pepper, potato, ground cherry, tomatillo and the highly toxic belladonna, as known as the deadly nightshade! Tomatoes come in a variety of sizes, colors and shapes. From tiny currant tomatoes to cherry tomatoes, to large tomatoes.
INGREDIENTS
3 large tomatoes, chopped
3 avocados – peeled, pitted and diced
1/2 large red onion, thinly sliced
ground black pepper to taste
1/2 (8 ounce) bottle balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing (read the label and please – make a healthy choice)
DIRECTIONS
In a large serving bowl, toss together the tomatoes, avocados and red onion. Sprinkle black pepper, to taste, and then gently pour (go easy) salad dressing over. Cover and chill for at least one hour before serving to blend flavors.
Enjoy!

A Star Studded Twitter Celebrity Tweet

A special twitter tweet from Dena Ross, Entertainment Editor of Beliefnet!
Dena said, “We’ve selected the stars who use the micro-blogging service in the best way–to offer positive thoughts and advice to their followers. Click here to see who they are.
“Twitter, the popular social networking tool where users post short messages (known as Tweets) of 140 characters or less, has taken the world by storm. An innovative way to keep in touch with friends and family, it’s also proven effective at promoting services, events, people, media–really anything you can think of. Many celebrities are now using Twitter to inform their “followers” (other Twitter users who want to see their Tweets) of upcoming appearances, charitable work, and even mundane daily life events. Recently Demi Moore posted a photo of herself at the dentist, revealing she has a missing front tooth–something you probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise.”

New Moon: How to utilize the power of the new moon to change your life.

Our Lady of the New MoonThe hype for The Twilight Saga: New Moon has begun. I caught a trailer for it this morning. Looks good, if you like Vampires, and who doesn’t?
And speaking of New Moons, I was wondering if you were aware of the power of the moon and the ‘new moon’ in particular? Here’s some fascinating information about the moon, and how you can utilize its powers to change your life!
From prehistoric times through the present, the moon has always grabbed hold of our imagination. The moon was our first timekeeper. The Moon causes the ebb and flow of the tides; and because our bodies are 75% water, the moon also effects our emotions, moods, sleep patterns, and for women, our menstrual cycles.
The moon’s cycle lasts 28 days and through those 28 days the Moon appears to transform itself, from the tiny sliver of a New Moon to the glistening luminosity of the Full Moon (14 days later) and then slowly back into the Dark Moon to end the cycle.
The New Moon (the waxing moon) is a time associated with beginnings and growth. If you want to bring new things into your life, to start a new project, to start anew – a fresh start to your healthy food program, the New Moon phase presents a strong foundation on which to begin.
The Full Moon (the waning moon) presents a time of power. It is an excellent time to become aware of your negative thoughts. It is a time to overcome obstacles, to relinquish bad habits. It is a time of clearing.

New Moon / Full Moon Ritual
A fun exercise that can bring awareness and intention to your life.
Moon Phases, June 2009
Full Moon – June 7, 18:12
Last Quarter – June 15, 22:15
New Moon – June 22, 19:35
First Quarter – June 29, 11:28

There are two ways to perform this ritual.
The simple way, and the deluxe version. The results will be the same. It’s all a matter of finding what works best for you.
The key to this exercise is this: A pen together with paper can prove a powerful life tool.
If you choose the simple way, you will simply need a pen and paper.
However, if you choose the full deluxe ritual, you will need the following:
Maroon, red, wine or orange colored paper
White, orange, maroon, red or wine pen or marker
One dark red or wine colored candle
One orange colored candle
Matches or lighter
A glass candle holder that holds both candles comfortably
Incense (your favorite scent)
Gemstone, such as Carnelian or Garnet (anything red)
Water or a candle snuffer
The simple way: On the day of the New Moon (any time that works for you) make a list of all things new that you want to bring into your life. There is no right or wrong way to do this. My New Moon list has covered everything from new glasses to a new home to a new point of view.
The deluxe version: Same as above, but you’ll need to use the ‘right’ color pen and paper, along with candles, etc. Again, you should write out list of all things you want to bring into your life. After you complete your list, pick three that deeply resonate. And then, place your list under the plate that holds the candles, and with gemstone in hand, while candles and incense are burning, ask the universe for your three wishes.
“I ask the universe to bring hot, steamy, love into my life.”
“I ask the universe to bring large sums of cash into my life.”
“I ask the universe to bring a new gourmet deli to my block that stocks light bread.”
These are examples, of course, and you should create your own list. And be specific!
Repeat the wishes out loud three times. Let the candles burn for as long as you are focused on your wishes. Do not blow them out. Either wet your fingers and pinch the flame out, or use a snuffer.
Keep your ‘ritual kit’ in a safe place. Save your list and when you write next month’s New Moon list, be sure to compare. You may find that your priorities have shifted or that some of your list has manifested.
The Full Moon ritual is basically the same, except this time, you want to make a list of everything you want out of your life. Again, there is no right or wrong way to do this. My list has ranged from ridding myself of bad hair days to illness.
“I ask the universe to rid me of bad hair days.”
It has been said that 75% of what we write down happens. I’m not sure if it’s pure magic or that when our desires come to light, our intention takes hold, and our actions change. Either way, change is a miraculous phenomenon that we are all capable of making happen.

Xtreme Eating Awards 2009: and the winner is . . . .

ART Xtreme Eating.jpgOn Tuesday, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington DC consumer group announced its 2009 Xtreme Eating Awards. All award winning dishes were chock a bloc with calories, layered with salt, fat, sugar on top of fat, sugar salt, on top of sugar, salt and fat … in other words, bad for you, heavy on the artery-clogging fats.
Given that the USA obesity rates have reached epidemic proportions:
* 58 Million Overweight; 40 Million Obese; 3 Million morbidly Obese
* Eight out of 10 over 25′s Overweight
* 78% of American’s not meeting basic activity level recommendations
* 25% completely Sedentary
* 76% increase in Type II diabetes in adults 30-40 yrs old since 1990
One might wonder. Are these restaurants are on a mission to make foods are fattening as possible? Is there no ‘food morality?’
CSPI senior nutritionist Jayne Hurley asks, “Would you like an entrée with your entrée?” Clearly, she says, “It’s a race to the bottom, and there’s no end in sight.”
Please keep in mind the majority of us should limit ourselves to about 2,000 calories (I’m betting that’s an average, because I would gain at that amount!) 20 grams of saturated fat, and 1,500 mg of sodium per day.
The Xtreme Eating Awards go to:
* Red Lobster Ultimate Fondue: This retro item is also making comebacks at Olive Garden, Uno Chicago Grill, and at a chain that sells nothing but fondues, The Melting Pot. Red Lobster’s Ultimate version, “shrimp and crabmeat in a creamy lobster cheese sauce served in a warm crispy sourdough bowl,” is crammed with 1,490 calories, 40 grams of saturated fat, and 3,580 mg of sodium. That’s two days’ worth of both artery-clogging fat and blood-pressure-spiking sodium.
* Applebee’s Quesadilla Burger: Here Applebee’s inserts a bacon cheeseburger into a quesadilla. Two flour tortillas, two kinds of meat, two kinds of cheese, pico de gallo, lettuce, and a previously unknown condiment called Mexi-ranch sauce, plus fries, gives this monstrous marriage 1,820 calories, 46 grams of saturated fat, and 4,410 mg of sodium. Bonus heart-stopper: Applebee’s actually invites customers to top the fries with chili and still more cheese.
* Chili’s Big Mouth Bites: This is four mini-bacon-cheeseburgers served on a plate with fries, onion strings, and jalapeno ranch dipping sauce. (“Mini” is relative: each one is like a Quarter Pounder.) Like the “sliders” available at other chains, Chili’s Big Mouth Bites can be an appetizer or an entrée (these numbers are for the latter). 2,350 calories, 38 grams of saturated fat, and 3,940 milligrams of sodium.
* The Cheesecake Factory Chicken and Biscuits: Nutrition Action calls it “discomfort food.” If you wouldn’t eat an entire 8-piece bucket of KFC Original Recipe plus 5 biscuits, you shouldn’t order this. But unless you live in a city with menu labeling, you wouldn’t know that this dish has 2,500 calories. The rest of the winning–or rather, losing–appetizers, entrées, and desserts are in the June issue of Nutrition Action.ra sauce. (Source: CSPINET.org)

Knowledge is powerful. Please think hard before you over-indulge, go on a sugar-induced bender and/or clog your arteries.
Which tastes better?
