When leading a workshop at Omega Institute for Holistic Studies, my question to the group – “How do you know when you are sated?” – was met with dead silence. People looked at me like I was from Mars. I asked again, “How do you know when you sated? You know, when you are no longer hungry. How do you know when it’s time to stop eating?” “Ohhhhh …” said one of the participants. “When the Biggest Loser is over.”
We now know that the USDA suggests including 250 discretionary calories per day in our food plans; and that ingesting copious amount of candy on Halloween far exceeds that amount. Here are some thoughtful tips on how to keep your children happy and healthy in the face of school (lunches).
Prior to learning about the Mouth of Chi, I confess that I hadn’t give much thought to the importance of entry points, nor had I even considered my physical mouth an entry point or boundary. Now, with a different level of awareness, I will be mindful and give more thought and meaning to what I put in my mouth and what comes out of it.
MaryJo confessed that she frequently, throughout the day and sometimes into the
night visits her refrigerator, tugging on its doors – opening and closing them – peering in the vegetable bins and sometimes the freezer.
Donna said, “I love to cook for my family for the holidays and I’m not giving it up. My mother didn’t cook or bake for us during the holidays when I was a kid, and I’d always wanted her to. So, I cook up and bake up a storm each and every year for my family, and I am not going to stop! My kids, my husband, everyone – they love it. And, I repeat, I am not giving it up!”
Have you ever imagined waking up one fine day, happily and mysteriously naturally thin? I’ve always wanted to wake up naturally thin, so I could eat whatever I wanted. I thought freedom equaled eating with complete abandon. I hadn’t considered that freedom might be freedom from cravings or freedom from obsessing about food.
Food journaling keeps us honest. It helps us to keep track of what we eat and identify when and why we eat. In other words, keeping a food journal can shed light on our eating habits. Statistics show that those who keep food journals are more successful at losing weight and keeping it off (permanent fat removal) than those who do not.
I received the following E-emergency note the other night from a client of mine – who by the way – has permanently removed 18 pounds in the past 12 weeks. I thought it worth sharing, because I know that we all have ‘alien’ voices in our heads that ‘make’ us eat the donut, cookie, ice cream, pizza. That’s right … you are not alone.
