When I was a little girl, say 7 years old or so, I often visited the convent of Our Lady of the Snows in Blue Point, Long Island.

My father was a ‘druggist’ (old school name for pharmacist), and my mother and I were his ‘delivery girls,’ making drug runs to the nuns whenever needed.

In addition, my friend’s father was the groundskeeper. Imagine! We had special access to the convent’s grounds, which were peppered with statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A special privilege, indeed!

I kneeled at the feet of the Virgin Mother and prayed to wake up naturally thin.

My son says, “See Mom, your prayers were answered. Maybe four decades later, but still, today you woke up thin.” Cute kid, no?

I understand the pull, the desire, the craving, if you will – to mysteriously wake up naturally thin – for ‘this’ being a non-topic.

But that was not the case, nor is it the case now.

Sometimes we need to accept the reality of a situation and instead of praying for it to simply vanish into thin air (ha!), we are better served to pray for guidance, for strength, for healthy choices … for wisdom.

How and what do you pray for?

Spread the word … NOT the icing!
