DOG Ganesh JIG 2.jpg As Our Lady of Weight Loss was moving into a state of bliss on a leisurely and contemplative stroll on the “Road to Svelvesille,” she bumped into Lord Ganesh, the oh-so-chubby and wise, elephant headed Hindi God, who is best known to be the remover of obstacles.
Just as one might expect, Ganesh was carrying a ‘laddus,’ a bowl that was filled with sweet meats. His appetite for sweets is legendary. So legendary that offers of them are often left at his shrine!

“Oh Ganesh,” Our Lady of Weight Loss said, “It is so good to see you. It’s been far too long.”
“Yes,” Ganesh replied, as he offered Our Lady one of his sweet meats.
Thanks, but no thanks, Ganesh. I’m not hungry. And truthfully, I just saw the movie, “Food, Inc.” and unless that meat you’re carrying is organic, I’m not interested.”
Our Lady of Weight Loss continued, “But you know, there is something you can help me with. Many of my Weight Loss Coaching clients struggle with obstacles that are continuously tossed left and right in their paths. In addition to the usual ‘natural’ obstacles such as lightning striking trees and then toppling on a car, it seems they are confronted by their husbands bearing ice cream pops, their mothers baking cookies, the ubiquitous candy bowls in their offices, and so much more.”
“Oh, I know,” replied Ganesh. “Just the other day I was shopping in Gourmet Garage and just the amount of free samples was enough to feed my village for a day.”
“Yes, there’s that too. Obstacles and temptation everywhere. What can you offer to my peeps that might help to free them from food obsessions and move them forward with grace and ease?”
“That’s easy, Our Lady,” Ganesh responded with glee. “I can provide a mantra, a religious and mystical series of words that can be chanted aloud or silently. Mantras are, in a certain sense, the most ancient method of using affirmations that can bring change to one’s life.”
Ganesh enthusiastically continued, “Hey, isn’t “Step 75” in your fabulous book, All Is Forgiven, Move On about mantras? And by the way, congrats on your first book, Our Lady of Weight Loss being a part of Oprah Book Club, Summer Reading, 2009!”
“Thank you, Ganesh!” Our Lady smiled. “It is a thrill to be on the same page as Oprah, and yes, “Step 75” in AIF, MO is entitled “The Mother of All Mantras.” Now … please … what is the mantra you can offer my peeps so that they can easily and effortlessly plow through their obstacles.
“Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha.” Ganesh chanted 108 times.
* * *

There are many chants to Ganesh, but a simple and powerful one is this:
Om gam ganapataye namaha!
A simple and loose translation might be:
Om = Salutations! Everyone wake up!
Gam = The secret power sound of Ganesh. It is his “seed syllable” or bija mantra.
Ganapataye = Another name of Ganesh, the breaker of obstacles.
Namaha = Yo! Ganesh! You da God!
And here’s how to pronounce it!
Om = ohm or aum
Gam = Somewhere between “gahm” and “gum”. In some dialects it is “guhng”.
Ganapataye = gah-nah-paht-ah-yeh
Namaha – nah-mah-hah
Take your time learning this mantra. And then, as you chant your first round of 108 repetitions, slowly speed it up.
Om gam ganapataye namaha!
Om gam ganapataye namaha!
Om gam ganapataye namaha!
And to further embed, infuse, soak in the mantra, and the power of Lord Ganesh, Remover of Obstacles, chant while working on your Sunday Jigsaw Puzzle!!!
