Barbie Turns 50

Happy Birthday BARBIE!
Dear Barbie,
I miss you, Barbie. I really do, and I apologize for abruptly packing you and Ken up into your dollhouse and selling you to the kid down the street for movie and gasoline money.
What can I say? Rather short-sided on my part.
Well … never mind all that. I do have this photo of you and Ken, lounging around, complete with hand-crocheted bedspread, to remind me of the endless hours of play.
I want you to know that I do not blame you for my unrealistic expectations of womanhood. I hear you took a lot of flack in this regard and that some even blamed the rise of eating disorders on you! Geeze.
I never for a moment imagined that my breasts would be quite so pointy; nor did I think that my knees would not bend.
I enjoyed your sense of couture, and I appreciated that you had a metro-sexual boyfriend. You were the keeper of my secrets, my childhood friend, and I wish you, dear Barbie, the happiest of birthdays!
XoXo,
Janice

AND NOW … some Barbie trivia: “In 1963 with the introduction of Midge® Hadley (Barbie® doll’s friend), Allan® Sherwood was being designed. Allan® was conceived for three important reasons. First and foremost to target the “shared clothes” ideal with Ken®, second for the double dating possibilities and lastly as a “buddy” to Ken®. Mattel introduced Allan® in the1964 along with Skipper®, Barbie’s® sister. Allan® was advertised as Ken’s® buddy and as Midge’s® boyfriend. He was quickly discontinued in 1965 the year the second version was released, but was available for sale in limited quantities until 1966. Ken® was also available for sale through 1966, but found a extended absence until being released with an entirely different look and body mold in 1969. This was the only time frame Ken® has not been produced on a yearly basis. With Ken’s® new redesign, Allan® was going to have to conform to a redesign himself…or be dropped. Unfortunately, Mattel™ decided on the latter. They were already designing a new buddy for Ken. This new buddy Brad®, would follow a diversity trend that was well ahead of it’s time and follow realizations already established in the female line.” source: manbehindthedoll.com

Would you believe my mother wouldn’t let me have a Ken doll?

  • Robin Webb

None of us had a Ken doll, so he was always at work when we played Barbies! I had a Midge doll, too. My 1st Barbie had bendable knees – a big deal in ’65. I still to this day (44 yrs later) remember the name of the girl in my kindergarten class who broke Midge’s knee by bending it backwards!!!!

My sister and I had Barbie dolls and would say Ken, Barbie’s husband was at work just like our Daddy was. We would play for hour’s changing her into different clothing and taking her to everything and everyplace we went to.. In the evening we would say our prayer’s and lay Barbie down to sleep..
This was in the 60’s.. unfortunately my Mom God Bless Her Heart she gave them away… Boy was I very upset. Till this day I wish I could have at least 1 doll back..
I sure miss BARBIE!! I am now a collector of Marilyn Monroe. I am looking for the BARBIE FIGURE OF MARILYN MONROE.. I really hope I can find the BARBIE DOLL FIGURE with her standing in a white dress and the vent down below her blowing her dress up..
Marilyn Monroe was so beautiful!! In the 80’s I had my daughter and she had Barbie’s Ken, sister’s all the doll family and their playhouse, corvette cars, different clothing for both of them etc…. I would enjoy playing with my daughter!! I just Love Barbie and Ken and they will always be remembered forever in our Heart’s!!!!
    Love Always Mary.

There are some great images of Barbie’s on http://www.BRIGHTSIDEPICTURES.com
website. I have one of their shots in my home and it reminds me the 1960’s and all the Barbie memories that go with it. Check it out! There’s real charm to the various shots of her~I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

Did anyone else beside me had to wait until they were
“older” before they could own a Barbie.
My mother told Santa I had to be 10 years old before he could bring Barbie to our house….
Once she arrived, my girlfriend Gloria and I would play together with Barbie, Ken, Skipper, and of course the dream house, for hours….
Some of the best memories of my childhood were afternoons after school playing with Barbie in Gloria’s cellar…..

When I was younger, my sister had Barbie, but mine was a Tammy doll. I think it was a Barbie copy, but I’m not real sure. Anyhow, my mom made all sorts of Barbie clothes for us from gardening outfits to wedding dresses. We had hours and hours of fun. When I had my first daughter, she went through a lot of Ken dolls (it seemed like every one we purchased, within a month Ken’s head would fall off). My mom came over for coffee one day and saw Carol playing with the headless Ken. Needless to say, grandma went and purchased another Ken, telling me that Carol would never be able to relate to men or fall in love because she would always be looking for some guy without a head. We laughed so hard that day. Boy, I miss her and her humor!

Barbie, Ken, Midge, Allan, anyone remember Francie? I think see may have been Barbie’s younger cousin? I had the Dream House, the Corvette car, and a spa. I also had a Skipper and a Scooter. I had hours of fun with these dolls and my Mom used to make clothes for them. Those were the days. My 2 brothers would always try to mess up the house and crash Ken and the car into the wall. One day Ken’s arm broke off and my brother Jeff, put it back on with a wad of gum. Childhood seemed easier then.
    Thanks for the memories.
    Colleen

  • Melodie Null

I had a Barbie dream house. I got it from either Sears or Penneys. Cant remember which. It was all pink. I also had the Barbie Winnebago/Camper. It had plastic sleeping bags. I would drive that thing all over the back yard. I had barbie, ken, skipper, and midge. Such wonderful memories. I still have some barbies.

While I’m not old enough to know all the dates of events that Janice told us of, I do still have all the dolls,…Alan, Skipper,..and when the other lady remembered Francie, I say “what about PJ??” Also, anyone remember the dark headed, short haired Barbie that came with a little sewing machine? Was she Barbie too, or another moniker?
In seventies..I remember Barbie sort of followed in Cher’s footsteps, and so did PJ, and I believe another friend too, and they had these stands that made them dance, and great groovy outfits, so when the hippie Barbie came out in the Barbie Collector’s Edition, in the late 90’s, I just HAD to have her!
There was a Barbie in a pink dress, I believe in the eighties, and she was styled just like the girl in the “Saaaan-Yo” (Sanyo) commercials…and what about Sweet 16,…And yes, Melodie, yes, I too ran all over in the backyard with my Barbie Camper, and my little brother was so jealous, he had to get one for his birthday so his Big Jim dolls could follow us around the yard and camp too. Thank goodness by the time Barbie’s airplane came out, Big Jim had his own airplane too! Yes,…the days of childhood were well spent with those special friends…Thank you all for sharing too.

  • Your Name

Linda, I didn’t have to wait to get a Barbie…but I remember the Julia, doll, Diane Carroll was a nurse on television, about the time the Mod Squad, Dragnet and FBI used to be on tv. My mom was a registered nurse, and I wanted that Julia doll so very badly!! I would pick up the box, and gaze longingly at her..she was sooooooo beautiful, and looked just like the Julia on tv…uncanny! But I was forbidden to ever have a Julia doll. (and for those of you that think “PC” means anything other than “Personal Computer, or Prbable Cause” stop reading now) My father’s opinions and rules never evolved,..which due to my “color blindness” caused me much grief coming along…but I am forever grateful I see with my eyes, and no one elses, and have managed to still love Julia, for just being a nurse!
