The Activism wing of the ID Project went Fast and Furious Full Throttle this weekend during our Day of Practice in Action on Sunday.  There was some Furiously Fun Sewing, Petitioning and Street Theater going on.  This is the Full Report!

We started with a Pep talk from Rafi, Ethan and “The Schneiderman”, then broke off into groups to make the most of the sunny Sunday.

NYS Senator Eric Schneiderman…there’s a lot of pep in that talk.

Running the Re-usable Bagmaking Group were Glenn and Meaghan from Bags for the People, they are totally awesome and helped teach us how to turn all these  scraps of old clothes…

..into these sweet bags!

The Petition Group hit the street to get some signatures in support of legislation that will reduce plastic bag usage in New York, which we hope to work with Senator Schneiderman to introduce to the NY State Senate.  Just a small group of petitioners collected over 250 signatures in less than 3 hours.  They seriously rocked those clipboards!

Happy people working to make happy laws

And after some prep time in the back room @ LILA the Street Theater Group took to the street performing “The Capture and Trial of the Bagmonster”.   The petitioners followed us up to Union Square and one look at the bag monster and people were begging to do something to help.

Hearts were opened, action was packed and a lot of people got a very direct visualization of what plastic bag consumption looks like.  Overall a great day!

We’re going to be hosting more Re-Usable Bag Making events the next three Monday evenings from 5:30 -6:45 pm @ LILA Center.  More info on that here.  And because this day of action was so successful we’re planning ANOTHER DAY OF PRACTICE IN ACTION to close Responsible Consumption month on May 17th.  Save the Date!

Action on.
