It certainly shows that we, as a nation, have the potential to do an enormous amount of good, en masse, if we so choose.
On a lighter note, my stepfather was a supply sergeant during WWII, stationed here in the US. He used to tell the new recruits that they didn’t need their gas rationing coupons now that they were in the Army (he then proceeded to sell them to the generals!). He also ran the base’s craps games. He was quite a character…
Yes, as many historians have noted, the collective effort of the whole US population to win WWII was simply amazing. That is the potential that we have. To harness that force into working for the collective good, instead of splintering off into a million factions and fighting each other tooth and nail, over everything.
To my mind, that is the definition of insanity.
