If you find yourself strangely sad, with inexplicable urges to overeat and overspend, it might be the fear of death that’s getting you down. According to a study publicized a few weeks ago in the New Scientist, “research demonstrates that exposure to death-related stimuli can increase consumers’ amounts of purchasing and consumption.” Or, “Thoughts of death make us eat more cookies.”

But don’t fret. Today is one of the happiest days of the year — and, like yesterday, falls into the category of  “days that should be national holidays but aren’t:” it’s the summer solstice!
